Interview with DJ DOBREL
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I just love making new music and pushing limits. I think with the rise of AI , human producers need to keep stepping up! Im ready for that challange.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My inspiration is a blend of classic and contemporary. I'm deeply influenced by the pioneers of the 90s rave scene—artists like The Prodigy, KLF—whose raw energy and innovation first got me into electronic music. In the modern era, I have immense respect for producers like Adam Beyer and Carl Cox for their relentless drive in the techno world, and the creativity of artists like Bicep who merge classic and contemporary sounds so seamlessly. I also love House and especially deep house with amazing respect for artists like Kerri Chandler. I have a broad taste in music which I believe allows me transcend when producing music!
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm particularly proud of my recent collaboration "Nightmare" with SPIKY. I was the Producer on the track and she was the Lyricst/vocalist. This project was special because it was a true creative partnership where we pushed each other to blend our styles. We managed to create a track that was both hard-hitting and melodic, and it received fantastic feedback from the techno community. It's a perfect example of how collaboration can lead to a result that's greater than the sum of its parts.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Quite a few projects across multiple genres including some powerhouse trance vocal collaborations 2026 will be wild!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I have worked with Robbie Rosen on a number of projects and he is an excellent song writer and vocalist.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. I believe in a hybrid approach. Digital offers incredible flexibility, speed, and recall capabilities that are essential in modern production. However, analog gear can provide a certain warmth, character, and non-linearity that is difficult to replicate. I use them as tools in a toolbox—the goal is always to use the right tool for the job to best serve the song, without being dogmatic about the source.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that I will be as committed to your music as you are. I will bring all my experience, skill, and passion to your project, and I will not be satisfied until we have created a track that we are both incredibly proud of. We will have fun, work hard, and create something that truly connects with listeners.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: My promise is that I will be as committed to your music as you are. I will bring all my experience, skill, and passion to your project, and I will not be satisfied until we have created a track that we are both incredibly proud of. We will have fun, work hard, and create something that truly connects with listeners.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that a producer just "makes beats." In reality, my job is more like a film director. I'm responsible for the overall sonic vision of the track—guiding the arrangement, shaping the sounds, coaching the performance, and making thousands of small decisions that all serve the song and the artist's story. It's a deeply creative and technical process that goes far beyond just a loop.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Before starting any project, I always ask a few key questions: 1."What are 2-3 reference tracks that capture the sound and energy you're aiming for?" 2."What is the primary goal for this song? Is it for a club, a streaming release, a sync opportunity?" 3."What part of the song are you most excited about, and what part do you feel needs the most work?" This helps me get a clear and immediate understanding of their goals and creative direction.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is to find a producer who not only has the technical skills but also genuinely understands and connects with your artistic vision. Listen to their portfolio carefully to see if their sound aligns with yours. A producer is like a creative partner; you're trusting them with your art. Take the time to have a conversation, get to know them, and make sure they are as passionate about your project as you are.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A laptop with my DAW, and a pair of studio headphones. That combination gives me everything I need to write, produce, record, and mix a professional track, no matter where I am.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been immersed in electronic music for over 20 years. I started out in the 90s rave and house scene in Cork, which is where I fell in love with the culture. That passion led me to production, and I've spent the last two decades honing my craft, releasing music on top labels, and playing at major events like ADE and Ministry of Sound. It's been a long journey, but that deep history is what informs my sound today.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a modern take on classic rave energy. I focus on creating tracks with punchy kicks, driving basslines, and memorable, classic rave music elements that cut through the noise. Every track is a unique exploration of house, trance, or techno, but they all share the same intention: to move people, both physically and emotionally.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with an artist like Sia She has an incredible creative vision, a unique voice, and a strong work ethic. She's a true artist who understands her brand and isn't afraid to take creative risks. Collaborating with someone who has such a clear artistic direction is always an exciting challenge, and I believe our combined energies could create something truly special.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Absolutely. One of the most impactful tips is to start your mix with the kick and bass, and get them sounding powerful and cohesive in mono first. The low-end foundation is the backbone of any dance track. If your kick and bass don't work well together from the very beginning, you'll spend the rest of the mix fighting a losing battle. Get that relationship right, and the rest of the track will fall into place much more easily.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I specialize in club-focused electronic music. My main focus is on House, Trance, and Techno, and all their various sub-genres. I'm passionate about creating tracks with high energy, powerful emotion, and a clean, professional sound that's ready for both major labels and the world's biggest stages.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is translating an artist's abstract feelings and ideas into a tangible, powerful piece of music. Many artists know how they want their song to feel, but not necessarily how to get there technically. I excel at bridging that gap—taking their references and vision and turning them into concrete sonic elements like a driving bassline, a hypnotic synth lead, or a punchy drum groove that brings their concept to life.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: With over two decades of experience in the electronic music scene, from the 90s rave days to today's biggest festivals, I bring a deep understanding of what makes a dance floor move. I bring a producer's ear for arrangement and energy, a DJ's sense of timing and flow, and an engineer's technical skill to ensure the track sounds incredible on any system. Most importantly, I bring a commitment to the artist's vision, helping them elevate their song while ensuring their unique voice remains at the heart of the project.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process is centered on collaboration and understanding the artist's vision. It usually starts with a 'vibe day,' where we just listen to music together—tracks the artist loves, references for the project, and even their older work. This helps me get inside their head. From there, I'll build a few core instrumental ideas or 'skeletons.' Once the artist picks the direction they're most excited about, we'll flesh out the full arrangement, record any final parts, and then move into mixing and mastering. Communication is key throughout; I provide regular updates to make sure we're always on the same page and moving towards the same goal.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I recently completed a custom-built studio here in Dublin, designed from the ground up to be a creative and acoustically precise environment for electronic music production. It's a hybrid setup, blending the best of both analog and digital worlds. I run everything through high-end Universal Audio interfaces, giving me access to pristine emulations of classic gear. While I have a collection of favorite Korg synths and hardware, the most important part of my setup is the room itself—it's a space where artists can feel comfortable, creative, and confident that we're capturing the best possible sound.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically partner with artists and labels to develop their initial idea into a fully polished, release-ready track. My work spans the entire production lifecycle, from ghost-producing a track based on a simple melody to providing the final mix and master that makes a record punchy and competitive. Whether it's for a DJ who needs a secret weapon for their sets or a vocalist who needs a powerful electronic soundscape, my goal is to help them realize their vision and create music that connects with an audience.
