Interview with Nalin Vinayak
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Laapata Ladies! I love the heartwarming story and I am especially proud that the Indian audience gave it the love it deserved. Laapata Ladies was also India's official entry to the Oscars in 2024!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A lovely independent film based out of Ladakh in India. I am the music director and score composer for the film!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. It has made music production accessible to a large number of talented people who deserve opportunity. I strongly advocate the use of new technology and believe in everything that makes creativity easier.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That they will go back with music they love. I don't have any limit on the number of do-overs. I believe in maintaining close relations with my clients and working hard to achieve their vision.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Everyday is a new creative experience!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How much time will a production take. My answer is the same as always - less to create something good but ordinary, and more to create something that stands out.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That hits are made by replicating other artists. While references help to some extent, it is most important to create a body of work that expresses who we are. Being novel is better than being a copy!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What the story behind there work is. I feel like music is a form of expression. My clients are the authors of a story, and I'm the narrator. If I understand the story well - I can narrate it with the most appropriate emotion.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I'm your teammate and your strongest ally! Write out your vision in a few sentences and I will give everything to make it real.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: An acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, a laptop, a harddisk full of samples and a midi keyboard.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been in Bollywood, one of the biggest film industries of the world for 3 years now. Before that I had been a professional musician for another 2. I would like to see myself as a reputed Music Composer in the world of films with a wide audience in the future. It is my dream to have the world appreciate the uniqueness and experimental nature of Bollywood music.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Experiment and be fresh!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: In terms of known artists it is my dream to work with Aurora! She creates lush and beautiful music, has impeccable vocal ideas and most importantly - writes music with a certain lyrical depth that is rare today.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more! If we achieve a good sound in a lower track count we get clearer mixes and a crisper master. Never overcrowd your production with too many ideas - and always remind yourself of the person who will listen to your music for the very first time.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: It ranges from Progressive Rock on one end to Ethnic Indian music on the other. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work and explore many styles of music, and I have grown to appreciate them all!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: A strong understanding of musical harmony and soundscapes in the process of music production.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: The highest quality production. A fresh sound. And most importantly, a deep understanding of the audience for the music we are making.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to give each track its unique identity. I like to hear from artists what their vision is and what prompted them to write their music or film before I proceed to create a special world for that piece of art. At the start of the creative process I like to submit 1-2 minute demos to solidify the direction we need to take before proceeding ahead to the finish line. Genres are not a boundary or limitation for me - I believe in doing what is best for your song or film without the shackles of genres.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with the latest audio libraries and sample banks to create the most modern sounding tracks and background scores. I'm an expert at using Cubase, Kontakt, Omnisphere and Splice. I also have a rolodex of the finest musicians for live recordings - who you will have at your disposal if we work together!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Steven Wilson, Bruno Mars, AR Rahman, Ram Sampath, Gustavo Santaolalla, Tamino and soooo many more - The list is longggg!!!
