Interview with Adolfo Velez
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: All projects make me proud. Each one of them is a stepping stone into what I've always wanted and dreamed.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on building another studio for a client where I will be tracking and mixing hip hop records.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog for recording, if you know what you want. Mixing in the box, resolves latency issues, gives you consistency. Mastering, could have some outboard.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You will get what you were expecting. Maybe more.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Every project is different.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How fast can you make this mix ? - It depends on the project, but typically within 24 hours. Do you use plugins ? - Absolutely, but only what I need where I need. How long have you been doing this ? - Pretty much my entire life.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I don't know what I am doing, because of my age.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How many songs ? Time frame ? Is the song recorded, edited & aligned ? When do we start ?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Talk to your provider, express what you truly want. There is a lot you can tell of a production with only a few words.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Electro-acoustic guitar, Laptop, midi keyboard, interface, mic and a solar battery pack. (Thats 6, but it no one noticed it)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing sound for over 15 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have a quick, straight to the point style, without shortcuts. You do not need a million plugins. Just need to use the correct knobs. I try to stay true to that at all times.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Daft Punk. Would love to be a part of their production and also incorporate into a tour with them playing with an amazing band alongside.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Do not over compress. Keep your dynamic range as big as possible.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on Pop, Hip Hop, Latin, R&B & Rock.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing a good record without having to change drastically the sound intended by the client. I understand the mathematics of sound, I can maximize my headroom and still have the right sound and punch.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring fresh ears, good working environment, strong communication skills, experience working in multiple genres.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Hear the song, then a rough mix if possible. Start a static mix after creating a gain structure. Master Bus Chain must be set before mixing individual channels. Add EQ & Compression and then FX and Delays. Final touches with automation and start reviewing process with client.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Computer: Macbook Pro 15", i7, 32gb RAM, 1tb SSD, 28" Samsung 4K Monitor, OWC Dock I/O & DSP: UAD Apollo Twin & Waves Soundgrid DSP Server Monitors: Adam Audio T7V Control: Avid Artist Mix
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love any kind of musician or producer that will put their 100% in a production. I love an engineer that is in control of a session. I rather work with an MD that can truly direct a band or musician. Communication must be at its highest.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most common type of work is mixing both studio and live. Also live streaming nowadays.
