Interview with AJ LeRoy
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will go above and beyond to ensure that we get as close to your artistic vision as possible.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The creativity and excitement of every project being different.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started off as a singer in bands performing covers for events and functions when I was 19 and have done a variety of live performance based work since; I’ve been working as a session musician on and off for the past five years.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Lianne La Havas. I absolutely love her ability to use her voice in such a dynamic way, going from very soft to opening out into an impressive belt sound but without ever sounding like she’s over singing a song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Soundtracks, jazz-crossover, and singer-songwriter/acoustic style. Although I have provided vocals for RnB tracks, soul tracks, and pop dance tracks.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring an interesting unique vocal tone with the versatility and conviction to deliver a strong, dynamic but true vocal performance.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I communicate with the client prior to recording to get a full understanding of their brief and what they are wanting to achieve before I start recording. When recording I will capture the brief of the piece and send the best takes back to the client and make any amendments they decide fit.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a small home studio set-up which works well for recording vocals. I use a Røde NT1A Mic and record using Logic Pro X.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Sampha, Lianne La Havas, Frank Ocean, Kelsey Lu, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, Kate Bush, Lana Del Rey, Joni Mitchell.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Providing vocals for new original songs.
