I have worked with Kartik on few of my songs. What struck me the most that he is such a genuine and nice guy to work with. He worked on my track and keenly listened to my ideas of the track, and he made sure that I was satisfied with the final mix. He is very warm and cooperative and skilled and passionate at the same time which is a rare combo. I will definitely work again and again with Kartik.
Interview with Kartik Sagar
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Recently, I had completed an Instrumental song for which I am very proud to work. The idea was started to build a basic melody structure and tabla groove in any of the Hindustani classical Ragas. After building the idea we had recorded the melody on Flute and the groove on Table Live. Now, my actual work was to make a contemporary song using Flute Melody as the dominating and lead instrument. So I had Produced, Arranged, Mixed, and Mastered an Alternative, Soulful Rock type of song using the Flute as a Lead instrument and layering with multiple productions of Guitar, Drums, Keys, Synths, Bass, Percussion, and all. That track was a great success for me and I believed that was one of the best tracks of mine in terms of everything.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working to make a deal with the distributor for my song which is going to be available on all the streaming platforms soon. Other than this, I started working on a Project to Produce, Mix, and Master a song for one of my clients.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I get to know about the SoundBetter from the Youtube so I haven't explored other service providers must but you can choose anyone based on the work samples, budget, and the type of music that fits your requirement.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital - First, I cannot afford to have an analog setup at tet this moment and second thing is that it is portable and with the right skill set and tools you can achieve equivalent(not exactly the same) quality at a very cheap setup as compared to analog.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Transparency in everything is my promise to my clients.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like everything about my work, I do my work for my passion towards it. I do my work passionately with a vision to get excellence in this field.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: The client always How much do I charge for MIxing/Mastering/Production in the beginning? A: It will always be depended on the project and the amount of work and time required to complete any project. So the amount will always be dynamic which will vary from project to project.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Generally, people think Mix Engineer will change the song in any direction and He/She tune the vocals in the Mixing. But, I always told my client that Production and Recording define the direction of Song like how its sounds like and in which direction the song can go. The basic job of a mix engineer is to make everting sounds correct and on the right level on terms of volume and the frequency balance, rest everything depends on taste. So mix Engineer primarily makes everything sounds balanced he/she not responsible to alter the sounds/production in a completely different direction. Note: Tuning is the thing that needs to be done and charged separately.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: About their vision for their product and how you want this to sound like in the end.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If you are coming to me as a Producer then please do have a clear vision about your song/sound/product and the Arrangement of the song needs to be sorted out before coming to a producer or If you are coming to me as a Mix or Master Engineer the do come with the reference mix for your song. Note: Reference should be chosen based on the balancing in terms of Volume, Width, and frequency spectrum you want your song should sound like.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Acoustic Drums, Djembe (I would love to take my MacBook and Soundcard too, but they won't be of no use because of no electricity :P but, still can hear electric guitar and Bass guitar sound without an external amp)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I was a Computer Science Engineering Graduated in 2015 then I worked for Dell International Services from 2015 to 2019 and playing guitar side by side. In 2019, I dropped out of IT and start pursuing a professional diploma in Audio Engineering and Music Production. Then I started my Home Studio and start working on projects in the real world.
