Interview with Johnny "BACEFACE" Ayoub
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The first time I was featured on FOX's "So You Think You Can Dance" was a surreal moment for me because at that point I had been making music for about 4 years and I had never had any real placements. Watching my song being played on TV accompanied by a full choreographed dance was one of the most euphoric, inspiring moments of my life.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently working on my own project as a DJ / Producer as well as many pop and hip hop projects for my clients.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because it just makes things so much easier when traveling from studio to studio as much as I do. If I had one central place that I was consistently working out of, I would say a hybrid of both analog and digital. But in my current situation, I would have to go digital.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise that I will give you the best of my effort to bring your vision to life and I will not stop until you are satisfied. A lot of engineers and producers think that its all about them, when in reality is the artists vision that is the most important and I do everything in my power to make sure that the client is thrilled with the final product.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that its different everyday. One day I could be mixing a song and the next day I could be composing a piano piece for TV / Sync Licensing purposes. Some people enjoy stability, I thrive in the not knowing what is next and that drives me day in and day out
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would let them know that in order to bring their vision to life, I would need a some what clear understanding of where they would like to take the song or project, as well as providing some examples so that I can understand the end goal. Once I hear a demo, I can hear the finished version in my head and do my best to bring the song to life, while keeping the clients original vision in tact.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Neve 1073, Telefunken ELA M 251E, Yamaha NS10, Universal Audio Apollo Twin, Macbook Pro
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path was very similar to most of the greats in the industry. I studied Media Studies and Production at Temple University in which I received a Bachelors degree. I started working in studios in the Philadelphia area and started to build up my clientele. I moved out to New York in 2019 and have been here ever since working on new projects everyday. If you would like me to go into more detail, feel free to reach out to me!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is aggressive, melodic and catchy
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more and if you really try to bring strong elements to a song instead of 100 useless layers, you will be able to communicate to your audience more effectively.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: The top three types of music that I work on include pop, hiphop and edm.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is being able to create songs from scratch, whether that be a piano composition or a fully produced instrumental.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to bring out the parts in a song that I believe will bring it to life and hopefully make it a hit record. I will bring my music background and years of expertise to bring your vision to life.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do for my clients varies. Some clients need their songs fully produced, recorded, mixed and mastered. Others just need their songs mixed and mastered. I can help in any stage of the process being that I come from a musician background and can play multiple instruments.
