Interview with Michael Bedwell

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: As a session player my job is to play your style. The style of playing will be dictated by the song. Finger style, a pick, slap whatever it may be. But the style I most associate with is jazz fusion. Weather Report, Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters that sort of vibe.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: Having my tune "Finish Line" (for which I was co writer and bass player) included in a film that was number 1 world wide on Netflix is an achievement I’m pretty proud of.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Simon Oldhams. Just an amazing vocalist. From R’n’B, soul and funk to pop or rock and everything in between.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: DAW tuner plug in, A rack mounted tuner, A tuner pedal, A clip on tuner, Ooooo and tuning forks....just in case

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: A groove that understands the nuances of the genre.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: Indie rock tunes for channel 4.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: The temptation is to say analog. But without digital SoundBetter couldn’t exist as it does. So I’d have to say analog instruments into digital studio.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Bass is just a guitar with less stings.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I started learning the piano at 7. Moved to guitar at 12. Heard Flea at 15 and became a bassist from that moment on. Gigged in various bands throughout my 20s. Had kids at 30 and transitioned into recording work. So for the last 7 years I’ve been a library music producer and session bassist.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Before you do anything in your studio turn on the “Low Latency” button.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Library music. This has massively helped my versatility. From recording and production to writing and performing. Whether it’s funk, soul, rock, pop.....whatever the genre I can help take your tune to the next level.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Bass wise the usual cats, Jaco, Jameson, Flea...etc The not so usual Julie Slick and Steve Lawson. But for all round musicianship it’s got to be Victor Wooten. And as great of a bassist as he is it’s his writing and command in the studio as a producer that really inspires me.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Anything bass related really. Writing, performing and recording baselines.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Steve Lawson. His approach to both production and improvisational performance is unlike anyone.
