Interview with Emma Gale

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of is co-writing the song “Poison Cake” for Marko Bošnjak, which won Croatia’s Dora national final and went on to Eurovision. I was part of the songwriting team, focusing on topline and lyrics. It was a huge moment because it reflected years of development, international collaboration and persistence as a songwriter.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently writing for a range of pop and Eurovision-related projects across Europe, alongside research into contemporary songwriting practice as part of my PhD work. I’m also developing collaborations in both commercial pop and trance/EDM spaces.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes, Christine Ekeberg who is an excellent singer and vocal coach. I’m always open to recommending collaborators depending on the project, especially producers and mixers who specialise in modern pop and Eurovision-adjacent production styles.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital for workflow and collaboration, but with an appreciation for the warmth and imperfection people associate with analog. Modern songwriting moves quickly, and digital tools make international collaboration possible in ways that would have been impossible years ago.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise to treat every song with care, honesty and professionalism. I’ll always aim to deliver lyrics and toplines that feel authentic, sing naturally and support the artist’s identity rather than forcing them into trends.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The moment when a song suddenly feels emotionally true and everyone in the room knows it. I also love collaborating with people from different countries and backgrounds and watching songs evolve into something bigger than the original idea.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: A lot of clients ask how to make a song feel more emotional or believable without becoming cliché. My answer is usually that emotion comes from specificity and honesty. The more real the detail or feeling is, the more likely people are to connect with it.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that I’m “just a lyricist.” While lyrics are a huge part of what I do, songwriting is much broader than that. I work on concepts, toplines, melody shaping, emotional direction, structure and helping songs connect commercially as well as emotionally. A strong song is about far more than words on a page.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask: What artists or songs inspire you? What emotional message are you trying to communicate? Where do you see the song living commercially? Are there lyrics or themes you definitely want to avoid? What stage is the track currently at?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who understands both the emotional side and the commercial side of songwriting. Communication is really important. The best collaborations happen when artists feel comfortable being honest about who they are and what they want to say.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop with Ableton Audio interface MIDI keyboard A reliable vocal mic Good headphones

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Music was always there, but songwriting became a serious professional focus over the last several years alongside a career in digital healthcare systems. I’ve spent years balancing full-time work with intensive songwriting development, international collaborations and songwriting camps. More recently, I’ve had songs placed in multiple Eurovision national finals including Croatia’s Dora.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Emotionally honest, melodic and commercially aware. I like songs that feel human and conversational but still have strong hooks and memorable moments. My writing often sits somewhere between vulnerable storytelling and big pop energy.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with Diane Warren because she’s one of the greatest contemporary songwriters of all time. Her ability to write emotionally direct songs that connect with huge audiences is incredible. I think a session with her would not only be creatively inspiring, but genuinely unforgettable.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always mute the track and read the lyric on its own. If the emotional message doesn’t work without the production, the song usually needs more development. Great production elevates a song, but the core idea still has to stand on its own.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly contemporary pop, Eurovision pop, EDM, dance-pop, commercial radio pop and emotional ballads. I also enjoy darker pop concepts, cinematic songwriting and trance-inspired melodic writing. I also write songs for the Asian Market, Kpop Jpop and Cpop.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Topline songwriting and lyric writing. Especially creating strong concepts and emotionally believable lyrics that fit naturally within modern pop melodies and production.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Strong concepts, memorable hooks and emotionally honest lyrics. I’m particularly good at finding the balance between commercial and personal, making songs feel relatable without becoming cliché. I also bring a strong understanding of contemporary European pop trends and Eurovision songwriting.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I usually start with the concept and emotional core of the song before writing lyrics. Once we know what the song is really trying to say, I develop hooks, title ideas and melodic phrasing around the track. I tend to work collaboratively and iteratively, refining syllables, rhythm and conversational flow until the lyric feels natural to sing and emotionally believable.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My setup is built for fast collaboration and remote writing. I work primarily from a home studio using Ableton-based workflows alongside professional vocal recording equipment and demo production tools. Because I collaborate internationally, a lot of my workflow is cloud-based with sessions, references and toplines shared in real time between writers, producers and artists.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by writers and producers who combine strong emotional storytelling with commercial impact. People like Max Martin, Julia Michaels, Ryan Tedder, Savan Kotecha and David Guetta have all influenced the way I think about melody and lyric simplicity. I’m also heavily inspired by the Scandinavian songwriting scene and the collaborative culture around Eurovision songwriting camps.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I primarily work as a topline songwriter and lyricist, writing contemporary pop, EDM, Eurovision and commercial crossover songs. A lot of my work focuses on developing strong concepts, emotionally believable lyrics, and memorable hooks that feel current without losing authenticity. I also collaborate remotely with producers and artists across Europe, helping shape songs from initial idea through to final demo.
