Interview with Jack Summerfield
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was the assistant musical director, mixer, and percussion recordings for a variety of theatre shows over the years. We were restricted to a small band so use custom made backing tracks to enhance the audio production for the show.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Sound sample banks of my drums and percussion.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both offer fantastic advantages, just depends what you're trying to achieve.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Work with a wide variety of people and make great music!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's the inspiration behind the song. What are you looking for in the end result.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been a professional drummer for around 15 years. In this time, I've worked with a variety of bands and artists recording songs and playing shows globally.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Solid, energetic, and creative.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Justin Hawkins, love his approach music and the song.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Use drum triggers to side chain the gate for a particular drum.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock and pop material.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Playing for the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Creative freedom.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to keep things pretty informal, like to introduce myself on a brief video call and can discuss the work and any ideas we both have. Another call should any revisions be required.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm fortunate enough to have access to a lovely sounding small wooden live room. It's ideal for tight sounds or can use a selection of room mics and post production to make it REALLY roomy. I use Rode, Audix, Shure, and Senheiser microphones running through Audient Evo 16 interfaces.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Live drum and/or percussion recording.
