Hello,

My name is Benoît Vanhoffelen, I'm a french music composer, living in Paris.
I compose music for films, TV, brands, games, web, and other medias.

Each time I have to compose some music, I imagine, then create and propose something original that can fit perfectly with any support for wich the music is created.

I offer my skills to people who need to highlight their project or their brand with original and personalized music.

Interview with Benoît Vanhoffelen

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: My keyboard, my computer, my mug, a comfy chair, and a nice desk !

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: I mainly make classical and cinematic music, composed with orchestra instruments like strings, horns and all you can find in a big orchestra !

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: Bear Mc Creary, as a music composer assistant. He is an inspiring great composer, and surely a great person too. As a director, I would love to work with Andarta Studios, on animated movies and short films. In Games industry, I really love the different works of Arkane Studio.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: "Be original but only make something you know you can do, and always keep in mind that the last word on your work is the director's one."

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I usually work for films (short or long ones), society or nature/animals documentaries, and games ! I also love when I have a project which include scoring animated scenes.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: I think that the most important thing in being a composer is to be attentive to the director's wishes and to understand the story. For that, I can say that is a quality of mine, to be patient and to hear all I can, for a better understanding of "what are the needs in terms of music". I also can say that I am a very optimistic person, and always try to keep a cheerful temperament !

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: First, I meet the director, and have a talk on his/her work so far, his/her universe, and then the job he/she asks me to do. Then, I try to find the emotions, the "colours "of the project: is it sad? Happy? Will my music have an importance to describe a situation, a landscape or to represent characters ? In association with the director, I will first imagine what could put the film/project on the best way for the public to understand and be captivated in the story. Finally I start the music creation, with the images in front of me, and all the instruments on my computer or in studio.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I have got a 88 keys Native Instrument Komplete Kontrol keyboard, an external sound card also from NI, and I work on a Macbook Pro, with Logic Pro X. I also have a Tintin mug, quite often filled up with coffee...

  17. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  18. A: I feel like I am very impressed with film music composers, like John William or Hans Zimmer. The music industry grew up so fast, when they started to make music eletronic devices like DAW and realistic samples did not exist yet. Everything is more simple today, still the music composer needs to understand and be understood by directors, to create an immersive music, that alows anybody to "feel" the movie he is watching !

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I compose for films, brands, web (Youtube, Tik Tok), short films and documentaries, games... I usually love to meet directors from various universes, and adapt my music to their project.
