Reel Recording is one of my favorite studios in Nashville. Erik and Mark are hard working, creative, versatile, and excellent engineers. Whether it's recording demos or engineering, mixing, and mastering entire albums, they always approach every project with only one goal in mind: making sure the client gets exactly what they want.

These pros excel at two crucial things: they listen and deliver. They listen to an artist's vision. They listen the songs, the room, the gear. They take time sweetening the subtleties of what they hear. They deliver. Tracking, mixing, mastering - they don't skimp on the last 2% that takes a recording from good to great. A day at Reel is not wasted.

These guys are the real deal. I've worked with them for many years on different projects for major labels and sync. They always do an amazing job with my vocals, production, track, mixing, & mastering. They give each song the attention it needs and stick to the vision of each project. I highly recommend them.

Interview with Reel Recording

Analog or digital and why?
Modern music production is about understanding the strengths of both analog and digital tools. It is not as black and white as people want to make it out to be. A successful engineer/mixer will know the correct tool for the job without being concerned with what medium it is.
What do you like most about your job?
Getting to listen to great music all day and having an integral role in the artist's dream coming true.
What questions do you ask prospective clients?
What are your favorite records? What are you listening to right now? What kinds of sounds do you like?
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
Make sure that you have heard and enjoyed other projects that the engineer/mixer has done. Don't simply make a decision by the names they have worked with, you should really like the work they do.
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
30 years combined experience, over 20,000 hours in the studio.
How would you describe your style?
Many mixers have a very audible style that can be picked out by the discerning ear. We strive to be elusive and somewhat transparent in our style. Our goal is to mold our techniques to what's best for the song rather than molding the song to fit inside our techniques.
What type of music do you usually work on?
We work on a wide variety of genres from Americana to Indie Rock to Electro Pop. We pride ourselves in our ability to get into the head space of each project we work on. Take a listen to our sound samples to hear examples of our diversity.
What's your strongest skill?
We bring out the individuality of the artists we work with. We take the time to fully understand the artist's vision and work very hard to ensure that it's realized.
What's your 'promise' to your clients?
We promise that you will be blown away with the work that we do and we will not stop working until you are.
Tell us about your studio setup.
Modern and vintage analog gear coupled with a 1979 Series 1E Neotek console and a super powerful Mac Pro loaded with Acustica Audio's Nebula and Acqua plugins.
Can you share one music production tip?
Practice your parts and have them completely worked out before you ever step into the studio.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
Tchad Blake, Manny Marroquin, Geoff Emerick, Serban Ghenea, T Bone Burnett
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
We specialize in mixing & mastering, as well as production and recording of all types of music. We focus on getting inside the head of each project, and enhancing the essence of the artistry, resulting in a completely unique sound.
