Interview with Mark Galup Mastering
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise that you will be blown away with the quality of my masters, and I will not stop working until you are.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are your hopes for your project? Did you struggle with anything in the mix? What kind of sound do you love?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure that you have heard and enjoyed other projects that the mastering engineer has done. Don't simply make a decision by the names they have worked with, you should really like the work they do.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Strauss MF-4 Speakers and Amp, JFL CLF6, JFL Barry Porter, JFL VSS, Neve 32087
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: 30 years experience, over 20,000 hours in the studio.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: The finishing polish to bring it over the top sonically, and sound amazing anywhere your fans listen.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on a wide variety of genres from Americana to Indie Rock to Pop to Hip Hop. I pride myself on my ability to get into the head space of each project we work on. Take a listen to my sound samples to hear examples of diversity.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I bring out the individuality of each artist I work with. I take the time to fully understand the artist's vision and work very hard to ensure that it's realized.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I run full-range, state-of-the-art Strauss Elektroakustik MF-4 monitors with the SE PA-100 amp, along with dual Rythmik E15-HP2 subs. The majority of my chain is a suite of Custom Analog pieces made by the great Frank Lacy, with Lavry Gold ADC and numerous other options for conversion. Additionally, I have numerous other color pieces to fit the master at hand.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Bernie Grundman, Greg Calbi, Big Bass Brian Gardner, Mike Bozzi, Tom Coyne, Manny Marroquin, Tchad Blake, Dave Fridmann…
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Modern music production is about understanding the strengths of both analog and digital tools. It is not as black and white as people want to make it out to be. A successful engineer/mixer will know the correct tool for the job without being concerned with what medium it is.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Getting to listen to great music all day and having an integral role in the artist's dream coming true.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Many mastering engineers have a very audible style that can be picked out by the discerning ear. I strive to be elusive and somewhat transparent in my style. My goal is to mold my techniques to what's best for the song rather than molding the song to fit inside my techniques.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in mastering with a focus on analog equipment. I get inside the head of each project, and enhance the essence of the artistry, resulting in a completely unique sound.
