I enjoy working with my clientele, getting to know their interests, and seeing what their problems might be and addressing the situation with the knowledge given to me and all around me. As a composer, I am flexible and ALWAYS listening and responding to feedback. LET US MAKE GAME CHANGING MUSIC!
Jelani Najee Surpris is currently in the second year of his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Composition at Columbus State University’s Schwob School of Music. He is a student of Dr. James Ogburn Ph.D. and is a cellist under the guidance of Prof. Wendy Warner. In addition, Surpris has a minor in the study of Audio Engineering under Dr. Matthew McCabe. Surpris has been a student of the musical arts from an early age. In addition to him beginning piano at age 7, he grew up in a hyper-musical household where all endeavors that awaited his family were approached with music. Whether it be one’s loss of faith or rejoice in an amazing experience, the Surpris family would use a musical means to express their emotion. As a result, Surpris himself is a composer of emotive music. He focuses on music that is meant to influence and shape the listeners' ears to understand the allusions of his ideas.
Jelani Najee Surpris’s focus is regarding the intersection of Jazz and Classical music during the early 1900s. He is influenced by the compositions of French Composers Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy, and Gabriel Fauré. Moreover, Surpris finds much of his roots in the hard bop and bebop jazz of notable composers such as John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk.
