Toronto based Singer/ Songwriter/ Lo-fi Producer specializing in dreamy topline vocals and lush harmonies
Hi there sweet folks :) My name is Rose, and I am a Vocalist, Producer, and a Wildland Firefighter! Music has always been my most heartfelt avocation, and I would be honoured to bring that love and joy of music-making to your projects.
I have 8 years of formal education in Voice, Music Theory and Trumpet - my favourite area of study was Jazz. Through writing and composing music for 15 + years, I have developed a unique style and skillset of creating powerful vocal soundscapes through the use of intricate harmonies blanketed under compelling topline melodies. I am excited by the opportunity to add something very beautiful and unique to your project.
Pricing varies by complexity of project, but start at:
Vocals: $200 lead vocals, $350 lead vocals with background harmonies
Send me a message and we’ll discuss your project and see if I’m a fit for you! I’ll send you an mp3 rough mix for your approval, do one round of revisions if needed, then once you approve and release funds, I will send all stems as .wav files dry/raw, completely tuned and edited. I can deliver fast turnarounds of 24-48 hours when my schedule allows for an extra charge of $75 but 3-5 days is standard.
I look forward to connecting with you and helping you bring your songs to life :)

Interview with Rose Brokenshire
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: A project I worked on that I am especially proud of is a meditation project I was hired to create by a large Toronto yoga studio. They sent me five 5 minute spoken meditations, and I created unique ambient music for each of them. It was an incredibly beautiful and relaxing project to work on, and felt deeply healing and fulfilling as I am someone who has used meditation to relieve my chronic headaches and waves of stress.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I am working on a VERY special project!! I have self-produced 9 original songs that I will be releasing in 6 week intervals beginning on February 11th, 2022! You can find my original music on all streaming platforms under 'Rose Brokenshire' :)
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet as it is not a well known service here in Canada but I am hoping to change that and get fellow musicians on here!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog vocals and guitar, but Digital midi keyboard for now. I would like to have a complete Analogue recording setup one day, because I deeply enjoy sonic soundscapes, wobbly imperfect sounds that add such a special character to music.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to clients is that I will commit to their project 100% and dedicate myself to creating something brilliant and unique for them. I will add special sounds and feelings through harmonies and melodies that will joyfully surprise them.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love that I get to create something new every day, and that I get to help other artists bring their ideas to life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Customers most commonly ask me if I use any subtle autotune, and the answer is no, my voice is just very accurate haha!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that it is for fun, not for profit. It is both, luckily! I am grateful to be able to express myself through singing and songwriting, and extra grateful to be able to do that as a career.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask them how they want their song to feel for the listener, the energy they want to portray through their music and what they want the listener to walk away feeling after listening.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Listen to the music I make and see how it makes you feel. If you feel compelled by someones work, then they're a good fit for you. Don't settle for just anyone, because the right artist is out there, sometimes it just takes a bit of searching to find the perfect person for your project.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If this refers to musical gear, I would take a USB mic, midi keyboard, computer, guitar, and loop pedal. The simplest full setup you could have. Non gear, I would bring some christmas lights and solar panel for power. Gotta have that studio ambiance!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path is to work as a full time Musician. I have spent the last 9 years working as a Musician from October-April, and as a Wildland Firefighter from April-October for the Government of Canada. I love working as a WIldland Firefighter, but it is extremely physically demanding, and we do not wear respirators like City Firefighters, so the long-term impact the smoke has on my lungs is not worth the fulfillment the job brings me. I believe in myself as a Musician, Song-writer, Producer, and I see that through the beautiful words I receive from listeners of my music and from clients that I work with helping to create something beautiful for them.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is relaxing, ambient, whimsical and cinematic. I aim to produce songs where you can understand the lyrics not by readong or listening along, but by feeling the emotion that the music and soundscape itself evokes.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Billie Eilish, Patrick Watson, Chris Martin, Julia Jacklin, because their songwriting is so powerful and potent, and consistant. Their melodies are brilliant and their production styles are refreshing and innovative.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't overthink it. If the ideas are not coming to you in a moment, don't force it and don't overthink it. Take some time away to clear your mind and do something that feels good for you, like taking a bath or going for a walk. The ideas will come to you when you are not trying to find or force them.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on all styles of music but my favoutire types of music to work on are Jazz, Bossa Nova, Chill, Ambient, Folk. Quite a range, but I enjoy when I can sing a song in my most relaxed tone of voice which is in my speaking range., similar to a Billie Eilish feel.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my voice and turnaround time. I do not have issues with vocal pitch and am extremely efficient when I enter the studio space. I can create inimitable harmonies and melodies very organically which allows me to deliver a fast turnaround time to my clients.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a unique and vibrant vocal soundscape. I believe that my voice and style are quite unique, and I feel confident in creating special harmonies and melodies that will take the listener by beautiful surprise.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process is to establish a clear mind and focused energy before entering my studio space, I will do this by doing a small meditation, taking a walk and having a tea before I begin my work for the day. Sounds a bit hippie but it really allows me to ground myself and fully connect to the project that I am about to create for. I then import the files to my work program where I will listen through multiple times to get a feel and connection for the project. I will begin by creating a bed vocal harmonies and adding the topline vocals once everything else is complete so that I am singing the main part over music that will evoke the full feel of what the topline voice should express.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is a quiet and peaceful room filled with plants and views of mountains. I use a Rode NT1A microphone and Apogee Duet Interface as well as several small midi keyboards for my Producing work! It is important to me to have a studio space that is calm, inviting and inspiring.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Other musicians and music professionals that inspire me are Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Billie Eilish, Bon Iver, Patrick Watson and many others. I admire musicians that blend style of old and new creating innovative and captivating sounds.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for clients is sing topline vocals and create layers of lush and unique harmonies throughout their projects. I also do a lot of topline writing - creating unique lyrics and melodies for their music.
