Interview with Pontus Frisk
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m happy to recommend trusted session musicians, vocalists, and mastering engineers I’ve worked with — just ask and I’ll connect you with the right person for your project.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both — analog for warmth and character, digital for flexibility and precision. The magic happens when you combine the two.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to respect your vision, communicate clearly, and deliver work that meets or exceeds your expectations every time.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping artists bring their vision to life and hearing their excitement when they get the final mix. There’s nothing better than knowing the song will connect with listeners.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: “Can you make my song sound like the references I love?” — Yes, but with your unique identity intact. I’ll capture the vibe you want while making sure it still sounds like you.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That producing is just “adding sounds” — in reality, it’s about crafting the emotional and sonic identity of a song so it resonates deeply with the audience.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s your vision for the song? Do you have reference tracks? What’s the story or emotion you want to convey? How do you imagine listeners feeling when they hear it?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Find someone who listens as much as they produce. The right collaboration isn’t just about skill — it’s about understanding your vision and enhancing it, not replacing it.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop with Logic Pro, Universal Audio Apollo interface, Shure SM7B mic, a good pair of headphones, and a solar charger to keep it all running.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been producing, writing, and mixing music professionally for over 25 years, working with both international chart-toppers and emerging talent across multiple genres.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Melodic, cinematic, and emotionally engaging — with a balance of modern production and timeless musicality.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine) — her music is cinematic, emotional, and full of raw energy. I think combining her powerful voice with my production style could create something truly special.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t overproduce — leave space for the song to breathe. The magic often comes from what you don’t play or process, as much as from what you do.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly pop, rock, indie, and cinematic music — often with a strong melodic core and a modern, dynamic production style. I’ve also worked extensively with singer-songwriters, giving their songs a bigger sound without losing intimacy.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Turning a rough idea into a fully realized, release-ready track. I excel at understanding an artist’s vision and translating it into a polished production that stands out both creatively and sonically.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A combination of technical skill, creative intuition, and years of experience working across genres. I bring a fresh perspective, a keen ear for detail, and the ability to highlight the artist’s unique voice and emotion so the track connects deeply with listeners.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by discussing the artist’s vision and reference tracks to understand the creative direction. From there, I create a tailored production, layering instruments, beats, and textures to match the mood and style. Once the arrangement is complete, I focus on a balanced, impactful mix and deliver revisions until the artist is 100% satisfied.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is built for both creativity and precision. I work in Logic Pro X, with a hybrid setup combining high-end analog gear and top-tier plugins from UAD, Waves, and FabFilter. Monitoring is handled by professional-grade speakers in an acoustically treated room, ensuring mixes that translate everywhere.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by producers who blend musicality with innovation, like Max Martin, Rick Rubin, and Quincy Jones. I also draw influence from artists who aren’t afraid to push boundaries, such as Imogen Heap and Jon Bellion.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I produce, arrange, and mix songs from the ground up, helping artists develop their sound into fully polished, release-ready productions. This often includes vocal production, adding instrumentation, and creating dynamic mixes that translate across all platforms.
