Interview with Diondria "Dria" Thornton

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: What is your vision for your project? Do you have examples of the style you are looking for? What are your goals for this project?

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Make sure your expectations match the caliber of the talent. Be aware that if you are choosing someone who is a professional in the music industry you are expecting a professional sound. Most of us can record ourselves but some can't, so they have to acquire the services of a studio, recording engineer and/or a mixing engineer for quality final mixes for approval. This means there may be additional fees that you are not aware of, so understand that most of the fees charged probably cover the work and the contract help hired (if applicable)

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: A battery operated radio with batteries, 2 Mass Storage Digital Recorder (one for natural sounds and the other for vocals and writing), headphones, Dictionary/Thesaurus

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I started at Huntington Beach High School-Academy for the Performing Arts where I studied Show Choir, Chamber Choir, Chamber Orchestra (Violin), Actors Repertoire, Jazz, Tap and a little Ballet. After graduation, I joined a girls group for one year in Houston, TX during my 2 years at U of H. I continued my career in music by moving back to CA where I wrote and produced for myself for about 4 years. I met my current partner Chris who had been doing music for 20 years before me and we created a songwriting and production team together called "The Frontrunnaz". We wrote together for about 7 more years before we started getting commercial placements. Total I have been on this musical journey for 25 years and I have been doing it professionally for the last 7.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: A musical blend of genres and styles

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Rihanna, because she exudes freedom to me and I enjoy freedom in my writing. I want to learn from her and vibe in her creative energy.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Never duplicate but always compare the quality of your work with other successful songs and you will always stay in apprenticeship and competition with the greatest.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Hip Hop, R&B, Edm, Pop

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Bringing ideas to life through music and lyrics.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I bring style and uniqueness to every song I record. I am a professional and I take pride in my work.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: Depends on the project and if I am writing, just doing vocals or both

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: In my home studio setup, we have a TLM 103 and a Shure SMB7 Microphone through a UAD amp.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: Pharrell, Jay Z, Beyonce, Diane Warren, David Foster, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, Brandy, Victoria Monet
