Interview with TheVocalSweetener

Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Using my strong background in music (multi-instrumentalist) in combination with my formal education in audio engineering to assist clients with auditory improvements that make sense in a musical context.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My first priority is always clear and simple communication about materials needed, delivery dates and project details. I also make sure to check in with my clients periodically to make sure that the work is heading in the right direction. For vocal tuning, I tend to start by tuning the lead vocal by hand using Melodyne in relation to the instrumental. Once completed, I'll send an export back to the client for approval, and then match the tuning of the rest of the vocals to the lead vocal. After tuning, I'll begin work on the timing and alignment of the vocals if requested. At this point I send an export of the tuned/aligned vocals to the client for final approval. On mixing projects, I ask clients for a mix reference that they'd like it to sound similar to. I typically start the mix process by editing, adjusting and balancing the aspects of the reference mix that have been accentuated (rhythm section, vocals, drums, etc.). I do not use templates - every song gets its own unique and independent focus. Using my vast collection of analog emulation plugins, I then apply the same process to the rest of the instrumentation. Once I've achieved a good starting balance, I send the first version to the client to make sure they're happy with the direction it's heading. Then, based upon the feedback, I'll continue to adjust and compare to the reference, send updated versions until we've reached a mix that brings the song to life.

A: My top 3 mix engineers: Rich Costey, Michael Breuer, Serban Ghenea The best engineers have a background in music. This allows them to support the composition in crucial ways that go beyond pure aesthetics.
