Endorse Paul BoutinIve had the great pleasure of working with Paul these last 13 years! He’s the consummate Professional that treats all of his projects with care and detail and always delivers a sonically impactful mix. He nails every genre be it R&B, Pop, Jazz, Classical, etc.
Paul is a world-class mix engineer! He has mixed a lot of R&B/Groove records for me, and always takes my songs to the next level: powerful, polished and radio-ready. His ear and experience for r&b radio hits is unmatched! Working with Paul is amazing as he’s fast, reliable and always honest which pushes me to improve the songs and production so much! A true pro I highly recommend!
Interview with Paul Boutin
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Love Mariage and Divorce by Toni Braxton and Babyface. First single went to #1, was nominated for best R&B song and album won Best R&B album. I recorded, mixed, vocal produced and played percussions on it.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Two songs for a Netflix movie called "R&B".
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Benjamin Bourkis, a cool up and coming producer
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because it's way easier and faster to work with. I've done Analog for over 10 years and won't go back to it. As I said, it's the song, not the medium, even though some people will say otherwise.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To put my heart into your song.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That it's not a job
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I'm never asked questions, just asked to mix the song.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I'm not here to remix the demo. Even though that's what everyone wants.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Just play me your song.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I understand how to make a song hit you the right way. If your song is good, I'll make it sound real nice.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I only need my plugins. Gear doesn't matter so much, as long as it's good enough.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Record Plant assistant for a year in 1995 mostly with Humberto Gatica. Working for Babyface, moved to his private studio since 1996.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm not sure there are styles to mixing a song.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Prince but that will never happen. Sting
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It's always the song!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: R&B
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm very musical and fast. But my strongest skill is comping the best vocal.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Love, presence, a groove, feelings.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I'm more musical than technical. I like to start with the groove and the music, then go to the vocals.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Adam A7 speakers, SSL Duality, Pro Tools Ultimate, B2 converter, all plugins.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Prince, Lucky Day, D Mile
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Recording, vocal production, mixing.
