Angel Chen

Pop/Latin Guitarist & Producer

Angel Chen on SoundBetter

I'm latin session guitarist, arranger and producer. I like to mix sounds that are both loud and soft, but with "sabor".

I can transform a Pop Rock song, a Ballad song, or any track and add a special touch, something that conveys emotions and touches your heart! I have worked for artists, commercial brands, producers, among others.

I also record genres such as: Latin, Blues, R&B, Funk, Smooth Jazz, Lo-Fi and many others.

I'll record professional guitars for you—clean, crunchy, or high gain—whether you want me to double the guitars for stereo panning or just a single mono take.

I work with classic effects like: Wah-Wah, Chorus, Flanger, Delays, among other, as well as various amplifier and cabinet emulations (IRs) using my Fractal (an industry-leading sound system). I love the sounds of my PRS John Mayer Signature SE Stratocaster, and I know you will too!

Rhythm guitars, solos, arrangements, samples, loops—so many options and so much feeling!

Interview with Angel Chen

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I think I can be proud of everyone, but not long ago I worked on some live guitar parts for an urban music singer from my country called "Tayl G". I feel good because they were guitar parts that didn't originally exist in the songs and they were a huge hit on tour.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now I'm producing my album, working on both the guitars and the arrangements. I hope to finish it as soon as possible, and I'm also working on some beats for some clients.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't think so for the moment :(

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: For now, I work mostly digitally; I think the equipment standards are pretty balanced these days. But when the opportunity to work analog presents itself, I'll take it! The best is the best.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: They can rest assured, because they made a good choice in hiring me and trusting me... And they should continue to do so!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: First, I love music and I've always dreamed of recording in a studio, and second, I enjoy creating something that didn't exist a minute ago and, beyond that, makes it sound incredible!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Well, yes, it will turn out well, and I repeat, of course it will! It will turn out better than you can imagine!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Perhaps because I'm not very well known here, you might doubt the quality of my work, but you can rest assured that I will contribute a lot.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I need to know how much time you need it in, and whether I can be creative or stick to what you already have in mind; I can easily be both.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Well, trust your intuition; there are always uncertainties about the unknown, but it's by taking risks that you win.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Definitely a guitar, a generator, a computer, an audio interface, and a boat to get me back home xD. If I could go and come back, I'd build a recording studio right there. Can you imagine recording an album in the middle of the ocean?

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Well, I started as a teenager, playing in church groups, then I studied at the music conservatory in my country, then I worked in music academies, musical groups and recording studios, learning about this for almost 10 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I describe it as atmospheric, vibrant, and full of feeling. I can humbly say that no matter what genre I'm recording, I will make sure that what runs through me is captured.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: In my native language, I would love to work with Ricardo Arjona, especially since he's from my country; his lyrics and music evoke something in me. Now, in another language, I would love to work with Richard Marx. The song "Angelia" blew my mind the first time I heard it, and he's one of those artists who makes you think they have something more than just talent.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Technical aspects are always important, but I believe we should never forget two things that are at the heart of music: to transmit and connect with emotions. Great songs from decades past still live in our memories because they achieved that effect on us. So always ask yourself, is what I'm doing connecting with me?

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I have to admit that I'm a fan of pop music, both contemporary and from the 80s or 90s, and therefore I think I work a lot with that, but I also work with Latin groups with genres such as: Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Bachata, Reggaeton, Afrobeat, among others.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I think very commercial melodies, without straying from what's in the project, I love that my ear and feeling guide me to create something that people can remember and sing along to.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I mainly put a lot of passion into everything I do, this has a huge influence when recording and that's what I look for in every song that passes through my hands, of course obeying what the producer is looking for and what the song asks for.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I begin by thanking the person who trusts me to work on their project. Then I download any files they send me, open a completely new project in my DAW, and start by meticulously listening to each part of the song. I review the descriptions and references the client has sent me to begin testing. Once finished, I listen to the entire result and consider what else I could contribute to offer the client more options. I export the tracks with the required specifications and send them, awaiting approval and feedback on the work.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work with Fractal Audio, Focusrite, Alesis and my main DAW is Logic Pro X, although I also often use Studio One and Ableton Live.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Many, but to mention a few session musicians such as: Michael Landau, Dan Huff, Tim Pierce, Vinnie Colaiuta, Carlos Vega, Nathan East, Abraham Laboriel and producers such as: Quincy Jones, Max Martin, Emmanuel Ruffinengo, Lulo Pérez, Julio Reyes Copello and many more.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: They are usually rhythm guitars or guitar solos, adding one or two other musical ideas that they can contribute.
