Interview with Teo Farley (a.k.a. Skesa)
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog is not necessarily better than digital. Technology today is advanced enough that it's almost impossible to differentiate analog from digital only by ear. An instrument sounds good if it sounds good, whether it's digital or analog doesn't matter. Nevertheless, playing around with a nice hardware synthesizer will always be more pleasant than trying to tweak stuff with a mouse on a computer. That said, some hardware synthesizers are almost completely digital and sound amazing.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't be scared of deleting stuff. Knowing that you always have the liberty to delete allows you to have an open mind and better creativity in the first place.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: House, Techno, Hip Hop, Breakbeat, Drum and Bass, Electronica.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Percussions. Apart from being a producer, I'm also a professional drummer. I tend to use a lot of percussions and textures in my songs. Another good skill I have is being able to create songs of almost any genre. I can easily understand the elements and vibe of different styles and make something that sounds similar (without copying obviously).
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Bonobo, Peggy Gou, Four Tet, A Tribe Called Quest, Nicolas Jaar, Floating Points, Bicep, Dark Sky, De La Soul.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I produce, mix and master songs. I also help the artist in the creative process by orienting and recommending, if desired.
