Interview with Victor Schlesinger
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Tho I love analog sound, I have my mind and soul facing to the future.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: We will finish when it's finished.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Gettin to know a lot of beautiful people, discovering more about the nature of humans and reality through music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you looking to achieve by creating and releasing music? What are your expectations?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My macbook my DAWs and plugins, my sound interface, a good pair of headphones, midi keyboard, and a good condenser mic.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been playing music all of my life. I guess I started producing at age 11 when my parents gave me a Casio keyboard with a 5-track memory. I shortly studied sound engineering but drop out, so I'm mostly self-taught. Over the past years I've been also working as a creative entrepreneur. I co-founded a record label Jungla Music, and opened the first local digital distributor Tierradefuego.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Try to take yourself and your ego out of the equation as much as you can. That's the only way your true identity can break through your insecurities, and that's the only way you'll get to be original.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electronic, alt-pop, alt-rock.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Teamwork, self-knowledge, emotional intelligence.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to balance complexity with easy listening. Profound sounds and concepts that do not alienate.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually begin discussing at the level of concept, idea, melody line or key lyrics. Then I take that to Ableton Live and fool around until I get a solid section (either intro, verse, chorus) and develop the rest from there. When the song is at an advanced stage, sounding good and with a complete structure, I bounce that and begin working the mix and final details in Pro Tools.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Pro Tools 12, Ableton Live 10, iMac, Macbook, Focal Monitors, UAD Apollo 8, Waldorf Blofeld, Korg Volca Keys, Arturia Beatstep Pro, and a lot of plugins (waves, arturia, soundbytes, uad, fabfilter, etc...)
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Yellow Magic Orchestra, The Underground, Battles, Nicolas Jaar
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most commonly produce and mix.
