Our band, The Health & Rifle Club has recorded two EPs with Jeff. I have also worked with him on my side project Details of Eating and in both cases I have nothing but glowing remarks to give for both him and his work. I've worked with him in the studio, (having him produce and record our albums) for many hours and also had him mixing our albums remotely. Jeff's entire goal is to get your music sounding the best that it can. He is fast, dependable, creative, and is as dedicated to getting the best mix/recording as anyone else in the band. You will absolutely enjoy working with him!!

I’ve worked with Jeff on two different records, as well as a single.

He is the 3rd engineer/producer I’ve worked with and it has been by far the best experience. The guy is a Wizard. Not only does he tease out the best sound , but he has a great ear and is a great asset when it comes time to produce.

    I’ll never use anyone else.

Jeff is a talented producer/engineer and a delight to work with him! His sessions are always fun, professional and end up with a great sounding result. His passion for capturing the best recording and sound are unmatched.
I’ve worked with Jeff countless times for over 15 years in different studios. He continuously is upgrading his equipment to bring the best recording to every one of his clients. Highly recommend!

I’ve been recording music with Jeff for over 10 years across multiple genres of music (alt rock, pop punk, acoustic) and there’s a reason I keep coming back. He will provide you with a quality record that you will be super happy with. He has the unique ability to grasp what a musician/band is looking for, many times before the artist even knows it. Always an enjoyable experience.

Jeff is extremely patient and professional in his approach to teaching the art of recording and mixing music. He has an incredible ear and ability to mix your tracks to the highest level off professionally engineered and recorded music. If your music is important to you, Jeff’s your man. You never knew your music could sound so darn good!!

I’ve been a musician for 25 years and I’ve worked with several engineers/producers. Working with Jeff has been my best experience up to this point. He has a way of getting the best out of you and making your songs better than they were when you came in. Jeff has supported me with my vision and doesn’t try to change what I do but compliments it. He has a real strength for helping to develop vocal harmonies.

Jeff is always excellent to work with. We have done 3 EPs with him in the past 6 years and he delivers every time. He produced each record and mixed them. He helped us every step of the way, even with uploading our music after he was done. Can't recommend him enough.

Interview with Jeff Tretta

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am very proud of the newest Neato record. We spent a ton of time on it and they always encourage my suggestions.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A new EP by The Health And Rifle Club and a new EP from Neato

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Analog in/digital out.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I promise you will sound so good that it will make you have to live up to the recording.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Hearing the finished product.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Do I need new strings and drum heads? YES!!!!!!! Do I need to play to a Click? YES!!!!!!!!!

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception is the amount of work that is done when the musician is not around. I spend hours prepping a session, editing, and mixing. A good engineer spends more hours on your project than you ever will.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: what is the goal?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Write me a message first and lets have a chat. We both need to make that connection before music is exchanged.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: A beyerdynamic m160, the Apollo, my monitors, the computer and my crappy acoustic.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: My goal is to grow my studio and work with great people.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is to keep session laid back and encourage happy accidents.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Noah Gunderson, because he is awesome.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: PRACTICE AND PLAY TO A CLICK!!!!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I typically like to work with live instruments. This can be any genre.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My ears are my strongest asset in the studio. I am able to hear where a song should go and quickly point out any problems.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I try to make each song the best it can be regardless of the musicians. If something needs to be done to make the song better, this will be voiced and fixed. It is my job to make the band sound better then they could have imagined.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: My process revolves around communication with the band, to achieve an end goal with each song. I will typically meet with the band first and have a chat about the project. I preferably will have them demo tracks before, so I can get my wheels spinning prior to recording. Prep is key with recording. From there we go into tracking or doing live takes. I will stop along the way and give my feedback.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a protools based studio with top of the line microphones and preamps. The universal audio Apollo is the main hub in the studio. I use a hybrid technique with all of my productions to achieve a warm sound and clarity.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: My favorite music producer is Butch Walker. He works with an array of musicians and always puts out great work.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: My role is specifically a producer, but I have my hands on entire projects. From preproduction to mastering. In my studio I am the sole engineer, so I wear all of the hats.
