Interview with Juan Victor Belisario

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I’ve been immersed in music production, mixing, and composition for nearly 20 years. As a founding member of Viniloversus, I’ve played a key role in shaping the band’s sound, producing and composing multiple albums. Our work has been recognized with four Latin Grammy nominations, including Best Rock Album in 2010 and 2012 for records I produced and co-wrote. Most recently, I fully produced and mixed Viniloversus’ sixth album, Mi Mejor Enemigo, which earned two Latin Grammy nominations in 2024 for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song. My focus has always been on crafting powerful, high-quality productions that push creative boundaries while staying true to the raw energy of rock music.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Alternative, rock, pop, electronic, folk.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: My studio setup is designed for precision, versatility, and high-quality sound. At the heart of my workflow is the Universal Audio Apollo Twin Gen 2 interface, delivering top-tier preamps and real-time UAD processing for professional-grade recordings and mixes. For monitoring, I rely on a pair of Yamaha HS7 speakers, which provide a balanced and accurate representation of my mixes. I also use iLoud Micro Monitors for an alternative reference, ensuring my work translates well across different playback systems. When it comes to headphones, I have two key options: the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (250 ohm) for critical listening and detailed mix decisions, and the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x, which offers a more colored but reliable reference for checking how mixes will sound on consumer-grade playback devices. This setup allows me to work with confidence across different audio projects, from music production and mixing to sound design and post-production.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: Music production, mixing, sound design and audio postproduction

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Kevin Parker's Tame Impala. He's a perfect example of how you can create music with very little and get awesome results.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Practice make perfect. Listen to music everyday and trust your ears so when you get to work on a mix you know the difference between a good mix and a not so good mix.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Produce and mix a song so it sounds big and original.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Besides mixing, I believe if a song is not well produced, I tried to propose ideas of sounds, structure and edits to the client.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I listen to the project and take notes of what does it need to be done within the mix, edits or production.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Rick Rubin, Pharrell, Mark Ronson, Kevin Parker.
