Todd Tobias on SoundBetter

Todd Tobias is a musician/ music producer/ mastering engineer in the rock, acoustic, ambient and singer-songwriter genres. Todd began his career with indie rock pioneers Guided by Voices in 2001.

BUDGET MASTERING services designed especially for the home-recording musician whose work does not require professional mastering at outlandish fees. First time clients: $12 per song / otherwise $15 per song. Extra costs applied for tape transfer ($20 per song). A tape transfer adds tape compression and tape distortion, if you believe your mixes might benefit from that treatment.

I will provide the artist with 1) individual WAV data files for all mastered songs (ready for upload to bandcamp, soundcloud, etc.) AND if needed: 2) a production audio master CD for copying/sending to manufacturer, and 3) A pair of review copies of the audio master for the artist's general use.

I will apply Equalization, compression, limiting, and normalize the volumes across the board to create a copy-ready CD for your manufacturer. Extra costs will only be applied for tape transfers (see above), or if special editing is required on my end (song editing and splicing)

What you will provide: 1) stereo WAV files of each mixed song (if you only have an audio CD, that's ok too, but .wav files are preferred), 2) Editing information (including desired fade-ins, fade-outs and cross-fades) 3) song titles, desired track order and all information necessary for the CD text. 4) extra payment for postage costs, if a physical production master CD is required.
Thanks!

Todd did a fantastic job mastering our album. The tape transfer process he uses added a real warmth to our recordings.
His prices represent ridiculously fantastic value, we will definitely be using his services again and would highly recommend him.

I had an absolutely perfect experience with Todd. I very highly recommend him and I hope to have the opportunity to have my songs mastered by him again in the future.

Interview with Todd Tobias

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: What is the benefit of a tape transfer? Transferring your mixes to tape adds tape compression and tape distortion - things difficult to replicate digitally. In general it "nasties" up the sound a bit. It's not for everyone, but if you have a home-recorded rock band, you might like to give it a try.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Do you need a physical master CD (to send to a manufacturer), or just the audio files?

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: I am here for clients who don't wish to spend a lot of money on expensive mastering. Sometimes high-end services are not required to achieve a positive result. If you have spent loads of money at a studio to record your songs, then you will probably not want to hire the "budget mastering guy"

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I began as a musician and learned sound engineering as a necessity. Later on I took up mastering the albums I produced after learning from my master, Chris Keffer.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Try to keep the bass drum and bass guitar in balance when you prepare your mixes. I often hear recordings where the bass guitar overwhelms the bass drum, and it's not possible to pull out the bass drum and make it 'thump' properly without also pushing up the bass guitar. Also, go easy on the EQ boosting on individual instruments. Try EQ reduction on unwanted frequencies, then boost the volume. It's another way of approaching it.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: rock, heavy rock, acoustic, lo-fi, ambient, instrumental, folk, singer-songwriter.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I master anything from rough, lo-fi rock to clean, acoustic music.
