Interview with Legend Studios
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I can turn a bad song into a good song
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are your goals? What is your budget for the project? What do you need from me? (production, songwriting help, engineering, career advice :)
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Don't settle or cut corners on your music. It deserves the best you can give.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: SM7b, Telefunken 251, UA LA610, Gretsch White Falcon, Deluxe Memory Man
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I was in full time touring bands through my early 20's before getting engaged to my beautiful wife, Liz. I was on full time church staff for the last 8 years overseeing music and community outreach before deciding to go full-time into production and songwriting.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Collaborative and fast paced
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Ryan Tedder
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more. Write great parts rather than relying on multiple instruments or layering of effects.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, electronic and ambient music
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Arrangement, guitar & vocal production, mixing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a skilled overview of arrangement as well as the ability to flesh out specific ideas that are captivating and memorable. I can assist with everything from vocal production, guitar/bass performance and tone shaping. I am very good at looking at a song from 10,000ft to see if it's complete or needs an addition/subtraction. I believe this is crucial for a successful producer.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to work fast and efficiently. The process starts with an overview of the songs and what the goals are for the session. Everything is in collaboration with the artist. We agree upon a plan of action and go about getting the best performance possible. I try to always have open and clear communication with the people I work with so we are on the same page with what we want to accomplish.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is setup to be collaborative so recording happens in the both the live and mixing space. I run Protools 12 through a Focusrite Clarett 8 Thunderbolt interface. I use high quality analog preamps from Avalon, Universal Audio and Vintech Audio to capture all performances.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My favorite producers are guys like Dave Cobb, Nigel Godrich and Ethan Johns. I love music that is both powerful and organic.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically record a project start to finish or just mix their project. I like to be very hands on through the process since I am a musician as well as a producer.
