Maralisa Simmons-Cook is a Bay Area raised, Los Angeles based singer/songwriter, bandleader and voice coach and a graduate from The New School in New York. Her vocals are rooted in an upbringing of heavy blues and soul artists such as Taj Mahal, Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse, creating a distinct timbre she incorporates into various genres. Maralisa has collaborated with a wide range of producers including Chrome Sparks and Ian Chang (Son Lux) and doubles as front woman and songwriter for Space Captain, a psych-soul group signed to UK's Tru Thoughts. She has performed alongside BADBADNOTGOOD, Ghostface Killah, Nick Hakim, Khruangbin, The Hot 8 Brass Band, Natalia Lafourcade, Kendra Morris and more at notable New York venues including Rough Trade and the Bryant Park Emerging Music Festival. Maralisa has an incredibly unique sound that stands out from the crowd. I've worked with her in multiple settings, from jazz to RnB to singer/songwriter, and each time she gives a performance unlike any other, all while remaining professional and fun to work with. Her songs with the band Space Captain show off her beautifully poetic lyrics, but are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her versatility. She would be a huge asset to any writer or producer. Highly recommend!
