Interview with Hillside Recording Studio

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Currently we have about 8 clients that we are working with throughout our weeks. Each are musicians or songwriters who we are helping remotely record and build their songs. Additionally we are working on our on Instrumentals Covers :)

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: To communicate & to get you a project you absolutely love. We will work EXTRA to make sure your song is perfect!

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Find a producer/client that believes in you and your heart for your song. This will make it worth every dollar. As musicians ourselves, we have experienced GREAT producers, and not-so-great producers, and the affect that can have on your music.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Folk, Christian, Gospel, Pop, Rock, Soft Rock, Instrumentals, Soundtracks

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Song-building, music creation, vocal/guitar/piano/synth recording

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: Anything that is needed. And that's up to the client as well. We are willing to help creating lyrics and catchy melodies, or jut mixing and finishing songs for clients.

  13. Q: What's your typical work process?

  14. A: • Know the client, and understand where they want the song to go. Understand the meaning and heart behind the song, because when you get to the root of it all, that's how you can bring out the most beautiful parts of the song! • Find a starting point. Organize the song, BPM, Key signature, etc... • Find the sound they are trying to emulate. If we are building a full song, we usually ask our clients for artists/bands that you want your music to sound like. This gives us a good starting place. • Record, communicate daily, re-record, re-communicate. Recording remotely is a huge blessing but also requires a lot of communication. It requires us to check in daily, and make sure YOU - the client - is happy with certain sounds and where the song is headed!

  15. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  16. A: I recently created the "Promises" instrumental on our page. It's an instrumental cover, and right now, I just absolutely love doing ambient/piano-driven beautiful pieces!

  17. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  18. A: I haven't been a client on SoundBetter, but I'm sure there are plenty of amazing producers!

  19. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  20. A: Digital - I love the endless opportunities. I will literally sit with synth sounds for hours to explore what sounds you can create!

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: Meeting musicians, and journeying with them throughout the process!

  23. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  24. A: I had like ten customers this month ask me if they can have their song sound like "ocean eyes" by Billie Eilish! My Response: Let me listen to it for the 100th time, and be amazed by the simplistic recording that just smashed it! Really to get a wonderful song like that, we just need a really nice vocal recording that we can stack and get some beautiful harmonies on. Create some tasteful pads, synths, keys, and a simple but timely beats... man you've got a really nice song. Of course, we would make it completely different, just using the same style as "Ocean Eyes"/

  25. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  26. A: I think people often think that remote producers are JUST beat makers... I see myself more as a song builder, music composer, and producer.

  27. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  28. A: The only thing we won't do is produce music that is explicit or vulgar. So we would ask you about your song to figure out if it meets that criteria.

  29. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  30. A: If you're interested or have questions, honestly just ask us! Even if you don't choose us, we would love to help you be successful and get a finished project that you are proud of! Feel free to ask questions about Pre-Production, the recording process, and even publishing/distribution or music business questions... we would love to chat!

  31. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  32. A: Keyboard, Acoustic, SM58, Mac & Logic, Mac & Cheese :)

  33. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  34. A: I've been in the music business for 14+ years. I have worked in a church setting as a worship pastor for 7+ years, been in a billboard aware winning band as the lyric-writer, songwriter, and acoustic/vocals/keys player (7+ years), have been recording working in Logic for quite a while now.

  35. Q: How would you describe your style?

  36. A: Ambient, Folk, Pop, Gospel

  37. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  38. A: I would love to work with Ben Rector - his music is such a joy to listen to, and he does so many fun chord progressions. Lyrically, I think he's a genius!

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Home studio!

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Personally, I grew up listening to Coldplay. Catchy melodies, beautiful atmospheric sounds, amazing lyrics... These songs just transported me to a new world and gave me a love and joy for music!

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: We are most commonly writing, building, and remotely recording full songs for artists! Whether you only have lyrics, or a phone recording of you singing with your acoustic - we would love to turn that tiny dream-song, into a reality! Send us a message if this is you!
