Interview with Jacob Khalil
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started off in opera and musical theater, now I write songs and play jazz in New York City. I love what I do. I've been at it for about 3 years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Jazz influenced piano pop.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Jacob Collier... Because he never ceases to amaze and inspire me.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Jazz, Soul, Folk, Musical Theater
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm honest. I will always give my best, and do more takes until I have given my best.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a simple home studio with a full-size yamaha digital piano/midi controller, a 2020 MacBook Pro, a presonus interface, Bluebird microphone, and a Kaotica Eyeball for sound treatment.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Ben Rector and Cody Fry are some of my favorite songwriters right now. Of course the genius of Max Martin and Ryan Tedder always inspires me as well.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: When hired as a songwriter, I make sure I know what vibe the client is going for. Often, the client will already have a melody or a chord progression in mind. If they don't have that, then they will definitely have a reference track to point toward. When hired to sing on a track, I will receive a rough demo and some lyrics, then I will record a few different takes of the song in order to get the best options.
