Nila Kay on SoundBetter

Hello, I am a singer-songwriter with over 10 years of experience recording and writing. I have released one album and several singles, written the soundtrack to an independent film, and have also done top lining for several producers. I would love to sing, topline, or write you a custom song!

I am a singer-songwriter based in the D.C. area. I have over 10 years of experience recording and writing. I graduated from Berkleemusic Online in 2010 with a Master Certificate in Songwriting and Guitar. In addition to releasing my album "Serial Love", I wrote the soundtrack to the independent film "Portrait", and also wrote the score to the musical "And a Ghost Gurrl". Both "Portrait" and "And a Ghost Gurrl" soundtracks were written and performed as guitar/vocals. I love toplining for my producer friends, and have released several of these songs as singles!

I have a lower-register voice range, which could probably could be described as a low alto. I am able to record clearly enunciated vocals, primarily in the singer-songwriter/pop genres. I can provide perfect enunciation in a plain American accent for spoken voice over work.

I had a great time working with Nila, she was willing to chat on Zoom so that we could synchronize our thoughts for the project. I received two different versions of the work I was looking for and we worked together to get the final version I was looking for!
    A pleasure.

Interview with Nila Kay

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: What sound are you looking for? What is your deadline? Do you have a reference track that you would like me to listen to for vocal stylings?

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Know what you would like from me and if there is a sound you are envisioning. What is your desired end product and do you have a deadline?

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: Guitar, recording device, microphone, pro tools, bongos.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I have been involved in music since the fourth grade where I played the flute. But I have been working and making money with music since about 2010 when I released my first album.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: My vocal style is sweet and low cadenced with a pop of bright energy.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I would love to work with Charlie Puth because he has great production and songwriting skills. I would also love to work with Quincy Jones and Prince (RIP) because they are geniuses.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Do not limit yourself to your genre. Keep an open mind with where the song can go melodically and lyrically. Don't be afraid to get silly.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I love writing up-tempo pop and singer/songwriter music. When writing for myself I love to experiment with all genres. The soundwave is my oyster!

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: My strongest skill is writing and singing. I also deliver the product in a time efficient manner.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I bring years of writing and singing experience. I can also provide guitar parts if needed. I also bring my positive attitude and limitless creativity.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: When toplining I typically receive a track, listen to it, press record, start singing, and see what comes out of my mouth. After that I pick out what I like or what the client might like, and then send a rough vocal to the client to see if they like the direction. From there I produce a finished product including lead vocal, harmonies, and bgv's. When writing, I base my song on what the client is looking for in terms of lyric, melody and subject matter. Record a rough draft, send it to the client to make sure they like where I am going, and then finish the song and deliver a polished final draft.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I use Pro Tools and a condenser mic with a focusrite audio interface. For guitars I use a classical acoustic nylon string with mic, or my electric Ibanez plugged into the interface.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: I love uptempo pop such as Dua Lipa and Katy Perry. I also love mellow, inventive, singer-songwritery singers like Julia Michaels and Billie Eilish. I also reeeeally love old school pop/jazz and American songbook type music. I also love pretty much all music from animated Disney movies. :-)

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: I provide vocals and toplining.
