Interview with Phillip Nathaniel Freeman

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Trust what you hear in your speakers and headphones more than what you see in your DAW.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: My expertise vocally is Rock, Metal, and Classical, but it's certainly not limited to that: Blues, Americana, Cinematic, Virtual Orchestral, etc.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Musical and Emotional Competence, which is enhanced by Perfect Pitch. This genetic mutation that I inherited is something that allows me to work much faster and provide greater attention to detail than other singers and composers, thus getting projects done faster with top tier quality.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Expertise, Creativity, Storytelling Depth, and Attention To Detail.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: Step 1 - Ask potential clients as many questions as reasonably possible about style, scope, references, intention, expectations, etc. Step 2 - Provide an accurate and comprehensive quote. Step 3 - Schedule a 15 minute call to cover all of our bases. Step 4- Record (either Live Direction via Zoom or on my own time). Step 5 - Deliver the assets IF WORK REQUIRES REVISION: Step 6 - Review desired revisions if necessary Step 7 - Re-deliver IF CLIENT STILL REQUIRES CHANGES Step 8 - Come to an agreement on moving forward through additional compensation based on the situation.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: Minimal yet effective home studio. Significant treatment in the room. Shure SM-7B is my primary microphone. Running Presonus Studio One 7 and industry standard plugins and sample libraries.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: Chris Cornell and Robert Plant have been massive sources of inspiration and guidance. I have vivid memories of singing along with Audioslave and Led Zeppelin records in my car as a teenager, discovering breakthroughs in what I was capable of vocally based on my obsession with these two vocalists in particular.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: My primary instrument is voice, whether it's acting, storytelling, singing, screaming, or growling, it's my go-to instrument and guides everything else that I do as a multi-instrumentalist, composer and musician.
