Interview with Coombes Studios
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Right after finsihing University, I worked doing sound design and sound mixing for a film called "Incriminating Mary" which went on to win 10 awards and was nominated for 3 more.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Digital for its ease of use, convienece and recallability. But I think alalog still has its place due to each piece of equipments unique sound, and somewhat unpredictability. I like that no other equipment sounds like what I have in my studio, and it helps me to develop my own sound.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being able to work with such a variety of interesting artists and on differnet styles of music.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Hmm. A C800G, 1073 channel strip, LA2A, 1176 and a laptop! (hopefully with all my software and plugins..)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working mixing and mastering for 7 years - and after a breif break to complete my Masters degree, I'm back at it!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Smooth and characterful.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: So many, but perhaps Jorja Smith because of her choice of instumentals combines more traditional jazz and soul soul sounds with contempory style vocals.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop, Rap and Indie/Rock.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Recieving recorded stems from clients, mixing and mastering them so that they are ready for distrobution on streaming sites.
