Interview with Domenico Messina
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What music and artists do you love that motivated you to make your own music
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: A single called "A Place For Us". It reached 10 Millions streams on Spotify and I'm very proud! I was writer, producer, mix and mastering engineer
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Some track for Sony and Columbia
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Simone Guida
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To give them a fully produced mixed/mastered record that fulfills their dream and is ready to exploit to radio or pitch to labels or licensing opportunities. And that meets my own personal demand for excellence.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The happiness of my clients after listening to the work done
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: There aren't common questions I get. Usually conversations are all about what the client wants, and I am asking them questions to make sure I can give them what they want.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Never happened
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My main advice would be to make sure you like examples of the work a potential provider has done, and then to actually connect and make sure you like their vibe and enthusiasm for working on your stuff. Before I ever produce for somebody I like to meet up over coffee and talk about the project and make sure we each feel good about working with each other before we do. I think that is important.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Focal twin, MacBook Pro, Apollo 8, Piano, Mic
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been a music producer for 12 years. I started out as a producer for fun, and after some years, I started to release some songs. Then, I've start to make music for other djs/producers. Also, I've start to learn mixing and mastering (workshop with Luca Pretolesi). Now I have my personal project "Dualities" and I've collect 20+ Millions streams on Spotify and release music with major label like Sony, Columbia.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Happy!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Disclosure, they have a very particular vision
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: DONT EQ/COMP EVERYTHING!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on a combination of Electronic Dance and/or Pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is creating a really great rhythm section to support an arrangement. I pride myself on being able to make a rhythm section quickly find it's groove.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a lot of musical experience to a song. I'm first and foremost a fan of music... a music lover. I'm honored to be a part of any artist's production, so I try and fill in the missing voice in the room to bring balance to a production.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the original work, preferably the demo file and begin to build from there. Each project is different but the flow for me is to lock myself in the studio and don't leave until I have a hit.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My set up changes quite frequently. I just added my new best friend, the Apollo 8 Quad with all of it's glorious plug-ins. Things are about to go to another level for my projects!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Sigala, Galantis, Disclosure, Sam Feldt, Kygo.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for other people is full productions in the vein of electronic music or hip-hop. A lot of this is beat-making, as well as mixing the whole track when it is done. I also do a lot of mixing work for other artists who I don't produce, just mix for.
