Live drum tracks, remote or local in the Atlanta area.
Hello, my name is Joel. I'm here to do live drum tracks for your project. What I'm offering is:
An original performance recorded through quality equipment. I will record without eq, or dynamics controls to allow you, or your engineer, max flexibility when it comes to mixing.
Multi-mic'd setup, 8 channels through vintage API clones, and 2 through vintage Neve clones, which we can run clean or hot for character. The remaining channels go through onboard pres. I usually close mic each shell, set up the overheads as a spaced pair, and double mic the kick and snare (in/out & top/bottom). I am willing to re-arrange as needed.
The interface itself is a MOTU 828es, great A/D conversion.
For mics I have the world famous SA57 on the snare - top and bottom. The top is a ZenPro modded unit with a T58 transformer.
Beta 56A's for each tom.
A Beta 52A inside the kick.
A WA-47jr (U47FET clone) outside the kick.
And, WA-251's (ELA M 251 clones) for overheads.
The drums are Yamaha. 100% maple shells.
22″ Kick, 14×5″ maple or 13×6″ oak snare, 10, 12, 13, 14, & 16″ toms, and a bunch of Sabian cymbals (HHX & AAX)
I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.
Interview with Joel Henry
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: An album for my band and an EP for a couple side projects.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: In a past life, I was an exterminator, I've been a full time drummer for a year now, though I've been drumming for over 20 years.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Dave Grohl, or well, anyone really. Dave just seems like a wholesome dude.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always be recording 🤷 I can't tell you how many times I've come up with awesome stuff in the moment, then couldn't remember it by the time the jam was over.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm currently recording in a 480 sq ft treated tracking room, with a seperated control room (also treated). Running a Motu 828es and an Ultralite AVB interface connected to eachother through ethernet. I'm using Logic-X on a late '14 Mac mini i7 with maxed out ram. I have 14 total mic inputs up and running so far, 8 channels through vintage API clones (WA412), 2 through vintage Neve clones (HA73), and the remaining 4 channels through the onboard pres. I also have 2 dedicated TS inputs, and I have about 4 more line in's available that I plan on getting pre's for down the road.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Thomas Haake, Josh Freese, Dave Grohl, Chris Adler.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Drum work. Recording.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Metal, heavy rock, rock, alternative.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Straight forward, a little heavy handed, somewhat technical.
