Interview with Jessy Wilson
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is writing and performing the end credits song for the major motion picture The Woman King. That song was nominated for Best Song in Visual Media at the Grammys in 2023, alongside artists like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Lady Gaga. My role was both songwriter and vocalist. I was responsible for shaping the emotional arc of the song and delivering the final vocal performance that plays at the close of the film.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is simple: I will treat your project with care, honesty, and full creative attention. I don’t see your song as just another file. I see it as something you believe in. That’s how I approach my own work, and I bring that same level of intention to every collaboration.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about this work is how it’s shaped me. Music keeps me open — you have to stay available to inspiration. This industry has made me brave and resilient, and I value that. I also love that this path allows me to continually reinvent myself as an artist.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: People usually ask how I find the right vocal for their track. My answer is that I listen for what the song is asking for, not what I want to impose on it. Every record has its own emotional architecture, and my job is to support that.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I think the biggest misconception is that songwriting works like a machine. I stay available to the muse. There’s an aspect of creating that isn’t about me at all. Most of the time, songs are looking for their host. The vessel they can come through.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually start by asking about your vision. Where do you imagine this song existing, and what do you want it to communicate? I’ll ask for your vocal and songwriting references, and whether there are any personal experiences you’d like to hear brought forward in the performance. That gives me a clear emotional and creative direction for the work.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as transparent and specific as you can about what you need. The more I understand your vision and expectations, the better I can deliver a vocal that truly serves your project. When I’m able to work at that level of clarity, the results tend to make clients very happy.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My computer, my camera, my headphones, my phone, and a few of my art materials. I don’t need much to write and sing. Just my voice, something to create with, and a quiet place to listen.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been singing since I was three and began performing professionally at seven. I started in musical theater in New York City, where I was born and raised. After high school, I began touring with John Legend, and through that work I discovered my passion for songwriting. My work has evolved across soul, rock, and alternative spaces. I recorded and toured as a duo before releasing my debut solo album PHASE as an independent artist. In 2023, I wrote and performed the end credits song for the major motion picture The Woman King, which was nominated for Best Song in Visual Media at the Grammys.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My voice is raw and unaffected, with a lot of character, weight, and texture. There’s experience in it. I bring honesty and depth to a track, and I know how to shape my performance to support the emotional world of the song.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Michael Kiwanuka. His voice is raw and intimate, like he’s right there in the room. I love the honesty in his lyrics and the cinematic feeling of his music. I’d also love to work with Pamela Z. She explores the voice through sound art and experimental composition, and that kind of creative curiosity really speaks to me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t polish it. Wreck it a little. Let it misbehave. That’s where the soul shows up.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: These days, my work is rooted in music for television and film, as well as experimental and avant-garde sound art. I’m drawn to projects that have depth, atmosphere, and a strong emotional or conceptual point of view.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Performance is my strongest skill. Whether I’m on stage or in the vocal booth, I know how to inhabit a song and bring it to life.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring feeling. I want the song to live in the body, not just the ears. What I write and what I sing comes from a very real place, and that depth carries through in the performance.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It depends on the project, but with songwriting I’m usually led by melody first. Once the melodic world feels right, the lyrics follow and help define the emotional core of the song.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I’m often hired for demo vocals, topline writing for both established and emerging artists, and background vocals for major recording projects. I bring a strong sense of feel, phrasing, and musicality to each of those roles.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home recording setup that includes Logic Pro, a Focusrite preamp, and a Shure SM7B mircrophone. I am currently using this rig write songs and demo vocals.
