Interview with pezyoo (dj pez)
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A new Me & The Boys project is in the works and I'm always making new beat packs for artists.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I loved the work we did on the first Me & The Boys tape on Spotify. We had so much fun trying out a genre that was new for us and the response was great.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Marty from Social Club Misfits is my good friend and co-producer on Me & The Boys
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Whatever best fits the project. Neither is better! Both are needed.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you produce a song like ______? My answer is I can handle whatever you need, but let's craft your sound!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I just sit around and work on one project at a time. The truth is I balance several, so I like to establish firm timelines that give the client and myself a good expectation.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who inspires you? What sound are you looking for? What is your timeline for this project? Do you have an idea/demo laid out or do you want to start from scratch? (Ideas/Demos are encouraged)
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would say have a conversation, whoever you work with you want to feel comfortable and confident in them. Ask as many questions as you need to!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: MacBook Pro Teenage Engineering OP-1 Moog Sirin A Comfy Chair Prophet 5
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been doing music since I was 15, I started as a DJ and moved on to producing when I got into college. At 20 I won my first beat battle and it set me on a path to meet a lot of cool artists. You can see some of those artists on my genius link. I went on tour with Social Club Misfits for 2 years and was able to produce a bunch of records for them. Since then, I've been working on my own sound and have produced for artists like WHATUPRG and KB.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as modern, but soulful. I love hip hop, but indie pop, and lofi are genres' that I love making as well. The Pollen playlist on spotify is what I reference pretty often.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Tyler, The Creator. I've been a fan since high school and his ability to genre bend and grow as an artist is something I have learned a lot from.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be yourself, your sound is unique to you. Be inspired by other producers or artists but the best thing you can do is find someone to work with and develop your own sound that you love.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mainly work on Hip Hop and most of my placements have been focused on styles like trap and boom bap. I also have a Lofi group called Me & The Boys.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my drums, I really love tailoring drums to a track and have had artists contact me to redo drums on tracks to better fit their needs or idea.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring sound curation based off the client's vision that has been honed over years of working with many artists. A beat can sound amazing, but if it doesn't match the artist, it isn't going to work. My goal is to bring excellent production that complements each individual client.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I'm a melody first kind of producer, I like to find a sound that puts me in the mood of the track I'm making and then add the drums in. From there I like to go back and forth with an artist to get some early thoughts, then create the whole finished song around that.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I keep my setup fairly minimal. MacBook Pro, Moog Sirin, Teenage Engineering OP-1, KRK Monitors, Komplete M32.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Pharrell, Tyler The Creator, Amine
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: For my clients my range stems from custom production, to remixes, and taking existing production from idea to full fledged hit. I like to have a conversation with the artist to get to know them, their vision and what they're looking for to really nail down their sound.
