Interview with CS Music
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Mixing a brand new UK act called "The Kind" and helping them land a track on BBC Radio 1.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Couple of acoustic/pop productions and some mix work this month. Loving it!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: -
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog has its place and so does digital. It depends on the situation but I mostly work with plugins as I find my work rate to be much faster that way.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To give full effort on everything I work on and put the time in to achieve their goal.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I just love being creative and getting a message back from a client about how excited they are with a track or mix I've done is aways awesome.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Here's my track...I need a mix...can you make it sound bigger? My answer..."yes...yes I can" hahaha.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's just playing or fun. I think music production is actually a really hard thing to do really well and it can take a lot of hard work to get things perfect. It's always worth it in the end though.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Usually ask for references of what they like listening to and if they have any notes for special moments in the track they want to really focus on.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who cares about the projects they take on and who can genuinely bring out the best of your music.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, Interface, Monitors, Mic and a guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been in bands, produced a wide variety of music for acts, library music for tv, sound design for comedy show and even composing for short movies.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Commercial and energetic.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Honestly, I'm down to work with anyone who has a good attitude and is passionate about what they make!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Sound selection is really important. If you're drums don't sound good it's likely the wrong sample for the job.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Anything commercial or mainstream sounding.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Identifying how to bring out the most energy of a track and making vocals clear throughout a song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to think I have a great creative flare and drive to add the most emotion and develop the most interesting parts of a song. When mixing I love get it to a place where it really sounds polished, commercial and exciting!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When mixing I like to load in all the stems and listen to what I feel the best parts of the production are and start to push the mix in that direction. When producing I love listening to a vocal and 1 instrument and just start adding a groove and bring out the strongest melodies and hooks!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a relatively basic setup but one that I have used for a long time and can work best on! Powered by an upgraded and customised MacBook and a Focusrite 18I8 interface. Using KRK Rocket 6's into a treated room and and working with a top line range of plugins and software.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love creative pop by artists that produce their own music like Charlie Puth, Lauv etc...but also a big fan of bands like Thrice, Pearl Jam and acts that have more grit to them!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Production and mixing for a wide variety of genres and helping to bring out the best elements of every track I work on.
