Interview with Brian Rajaratnam
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I generally spend a day mixing a song, and then half a day to revisit and listen fresh. Some songs, depending on track count, will take a little bit longer than a day, but never more than two. Then I'll send a version to the artist and producer and we'll do revisions from that point.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My goal is always to bring the artists vision to life. I don't mix or track for myself, if there is a specific sound the artist wants then the artist and I can get there together.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a pair of Focal Alpha 50's, and a pair of Auratone 5c's for reference with a Harmon Kardon Citation 12 amp. Along with an apogee quartet as my home interface. I have access to 1176's, LA2A, LA-3A, Pultec EQP1, EQP-1A, EQP-1A3, Distressors, Fairchild 670, DBX 160, DBX 160x's amongst other analog outboard gear.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mainly mixing, but tracking as well.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: There are definitely benefits to both. All the classic songs you've listened to on the radio up till the mid-2000's is mostly analog. There is a certain sound and a certain feel to it. I personally love working on consoles and throwing sounds across various pieces of outboard gear, but the whole process is time consuming. If there needs to be revisions or slight changes, everything needs to be documented and to go back and forth can be a process. With digital and mixing in the box the work flow is much faster. Hybrid mixing is the best of both worlds, and what I try to do more often than not, that way the work flow is fast, but you still can have a little analog love in your life.
