Interview with Tumi
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I love specifications. I really want to provide the best record possible so i would love specifications.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop, My microphone, my audio interface, the cords
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Since I was in pre-school, I sang all my life. Started singing in churches to musicals in my school and choirs. Since i was 5 years old, iv'e been trained by multiple vocal coaches spanning from opera to contemporary r&b and that really helped me because I have a range capable of doing multiple genres.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'd say my style right now is very nostalgic, melodic and gritty
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kid cudi. I really love some of his older work. I think its very raw and authentic. His branding is very nostalgic and down to earth. He really tells a story in his music. Same with Kendrick Lamar. I like to collab with artists who dont just make aa song but tell a story.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always make sure everything is in key. You may think a chord, or a note or a beat is on key when it actually isn't.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: usually EDM, or R&B
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'd say improvising
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Life! I bring the story and create the journey.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Usually, clients send me a beat or they send me lyrics+ a beat for me to topline onto. They tell me what vibe their looking for, if they want vocal arrangements, harmonies, doubles and I deliver!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a warm audio 47 mic, with an apollo interface, and i work in Ableton
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Rihanna, DJ mustard, Calvin Harris
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do mainly dance music and R&B, sometimes indie as well. I'm very versatile.
