Interview with Seb van den Berg

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: When I get a sketch or instrumental I guess I always come up with something straight away. No thinking, just feeling. Afterwards I might revisit the lyrics and the melody to perfect it. Vocal hooks, lyrical flexibility and overal structure of songs is where I come in and can contribute efficiently

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: Lately I've been working with other musicians through the internet. They send me a sketch. I write a lyric and a melody and send it back. It goes back and forth till we get the desired result which is achieved in either 10 minutes or in some exceptions around roughly 1 week.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: We have two facilities. One at home which is perfect for vocals and song writing. I use an Apogee Duet 2, Neumann TLM 103, Apple Macbook Pro, Akai Midi keyboard and a large collection of acoustic and electric guitars. The other facility is a former music venue which is set up perfectly to record bands and small orchestra's. With lot's of different microphones and many different guitar and bass amps present we mostly have producers and bands coming in with a personal mobile recording set up. Mixing consoles are not a priority in our studio. The ambiance plays a key role as the room is wide and high but can also be adjusted to dry and smaller. Basically it's a joy to work with.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: The first name that comes to mind is Stewart Copeland of the Police because I can totally relate to his style of drumming and it inspired me tremendously throughout my music career. Another inspiration has been Dave Grohl. He is also one of those artists that I've always felt a strong connection to in terms of style, attitude and song writing. Besides those two I must say that my musical taste has always been one of extremes varying from Michael Hedges innovating and divine acoustic guitar instrumentals to the otherworldly raps of Bustah Rhymes and all the way to the pinnacle of sound and creativity of DrumnBass formation Noisia. Other inspiring artists: Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Owl City, Scritti Politti, Dream Theater, Slipknot, Krs-One, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg,

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: Most of the times people approach me for top line writing and lyrics as well as vocals, MC or Voice-Over for commercials and cartoons
