Endorse Jon EpworthOver the years, I have hired Jon to produce, mix & master a few of my band's projects, and he has always delivered amazing results. Whether you're an independent band looking to get your start in the studio, or a more seasoned group of musicians looking to up your game, Jon will work night and day to ensure your vision is realized. He is a hard-working, consummate professional with a great ear for songwriting, and he's an amazing musician to boot. His drumming is phenomenal and his voice blows me away every time I hear it. You really can't go wrong hiring him. Do it now.
OK seriously, Jon Epworth is for real. He understood where I wanted to go with my project just by listening to it, and made choices and suggested options that brought things to another level. Jon is unfazed by complex sessions that combine all kinds of different sound sources -- especially including acoustic instruments -- and is able to bring the mix together in a way that unifies and enhances the energy of the music. I recommend Jon whole-heartedly.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Jon with many projects over many years. His passion, enthusiasm and incredible knowledge of music as an expression is unmatched in a producer. He’s helped me find my voice, and build confidence in exploration — both during pre-production and during the recording itself. His skill with the technical aspects of the project allowed me to really focus on my performance.
I couldn’t recommend Jon enough!I have worked with Jon several times over the years. Not only is his access to a studio an asset, his willingness to turn things around and be super responsive is a godsend. We once landed a worldwide sync placement from a quickly turned around DEMO version of a requested track. Based halfway across the planet, they needed it fast, and for it to sound familiar yet have some attitude - none of that was an issue for Jon. He knocked it out of the park, and there were zero requested changes. To say that this is a rare phenomenon in the music licensing world is an understatement.
Interview with Jon Epworth
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It really depends on the project - but I tend to work quickly, and if I'm producing, try to get ideas recorded while they're still relatively fresh. Nothing drains me like an artist flogging a song way past it's expiry date.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a modest studio set up: living-room-esque control room, a 14' x 14' live room for drums, and a small vocal booth - although I have a warehouse-sized space below me that I can use after "business" hours for some bombastic drums. I can track about 24 tracks simultaneously (which has never been too few tracks so far), and have a decent collection of mics, outboard comps, and a 32-channel console - along with a really good drumkit, a couple of Orange amps and a selection of guitars and basses.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I really like engineers and producers who take risks - Daniel Lanois and Sylvia Massey come to mind. I think Chris Taylor (from Grizzly Bear) is also doing some pretty exciting stuff. And the last D'Angelo album is a production (and songwriting) masterpiece. There are countless lesser-known producing/performing entities in many genres from whom I also draw inspiration.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I don't do a lot of advertising or networking; most of my clients seek me out because they like something I've done, or a previous client has recommended me for their project. I track and produce full bands, mix and master (although I generally try to convince clients to spend the extra dough on an experienced mastering professional), and even provide full backing instrumentation for solo artists. Some artists just want to lay down their ideas as quickly as possible, which I'm happy to help them with - but whenever possible I like to work on their songs and performance from the ground up. I usually try to budget in a good chunk of pre-production time at a reduced rate to make the "real" studio time more productive and enjoyable. It's pretty frustrating for all involved when a band comes to the studio and doesn't know the songs inside and out.
