Renny Carroll on SoundBetter

Hugely versatile vocalist specialising in rock/metal with 15 years+ recording experience as a session vocalist for licensing company, recording over 1000 covers from Tom Jones to The Weeknd to System of a Down and Slipknot. Released tracks in a number of different genres for a number of different labels, and always looking to broaden horizons.

I was the lead vocalist and songwriter in UK metallers, Forever Never, for 14 years. The band toured globally with a number of acts such as Stone Sour, Skindred and Lacuna Coil and played at the legandary Download Festival in 2009. The band released 2 critically claimed albums and 2 EP's before disbanding in 2015.

Following this I have provided vocals on a number of different projects in a variety of genres. Most notably, an album with Flux Conduct, called Yetzer Hara (2017) with John Browne of Monuments which was received very well within the genre.

As a diverse vocalist, I feel I am able to bring a fresh approach to whatever genre is put in front of me. To date I have worked on tracks from the following genres: Pop, Rock, Metal, RnB, Soul, Hip Hop, Rap, EDM, Trance, Drum N Bass, Deep House, Funk, Alt-Pop, Future Bass... and more. Although I would say I specialise in Rock and Metal, I think I'm able to give a fresher sound to whatever I'm working on.

I love working with new clients, and am always interested to see how different people approach songwriting. Whether you want me to help with melody lines, or you already have your own - I'm always full of ideas, and will always bring them to the table and ejoying bouncing off of other songwriters.

Renny is truly phenomenal as a person and an artist. We worked together on a fairly dynamic and complex track across two different continents. He communicates very and delivers exceptionally good performances and ideas. Light up your track. Work with Renny.

This guy has amazed me every time we have worked together on a track. He's a very talented singer ,songwriter and performer. With a few directions he can create the sound you are searching for in a track.

Interview with Renny Carroll

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: I believe my strongest asset is my powerful chest range. If I couldn't hit a note, I didn't really bother with falsetto... I would just try and crush it in chest voice.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I have been involved in bands and music now for 20 years. Initially I was in touring bands, and performed all over the world. For the last few years my focus has switched to studio sessions which I'm lucky to be able to do from home, and have worked in a number of different genres now.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: I am a heavy metal RnB singer.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: If you are a vocalist especially... get Vocalign. It's the single best plugin you'll ever get!

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I love working in any genre, but I guess my forte is within Rock and Metal. I'm am proficient at both singing and harsh vocals. My singing is inspired by RnB slightly more than Rock, so there is a quite unique crossover sound to it. For this reason I've been able to work on quite a wide berth when it comes to genres.

  11. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  12. A: Energy, power and conviction where it's required. I'm always full of ideas and creativity, but if that's not required then I'm good at just nailing something with precision as I've got well tuned ear from the years of cover song sessions.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: iMac (2020) running Pro Tools through an MOTU M4 audio interface. Vocals recorded through either a beautiful SE Gemini, or trusty SM7b depending on the project.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Michael Jackson was (and still is) my very first musical inspiration at the age of 6. I cannot deny his influence on my own style of singing, and I have been called on more than one occasion "metal Michael Jackson", which I do take as a big compliment.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: Over the last 15 years I've been predominantly a session vocalist for a licensing company recording cover versions. From Metallica to Tom Jones, from Snoop Dogg to Ed Sheeran, I have pretty much done it all. If you already have a very particular vocal melody in mind and need it sang with conviction and precision, I have a good ear for nailing particular nuances. Equally, if you need someone to be more experiemental and shake up an idea, or write a topline from scratch then I'm also good with this.

  19. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  20. A: Thanks to the internet, being able to work with creatives from every corner of the globe is truly gratifying experience. I feel very lucky to have collaborated with so many cool people!

  21. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  22. A: If I've been provided a melody/lyrics, then I'll always ask a client how precisely they want me to follow this, or whether they want me to sprinkle any of myself in there. I'll always take it on the chin if I try something that the client doesn't like though! That's on me.
