A seasoned genre-jumper, Shades proves his familiarity with his favorite styles through his vast discography. From Rock, Hip-hop, RnB, Jazz, and even Folk, Shades shines through with his guaranteed genuine ingenuity. Not only with genres, Shades has donned many hats in the music industry as a producer, writer, and engineer for a wide array of artists, proving that he is no stranger to the studio in any capacity.
Being raised in a musical household that encouraged cross-instrument lessons, studying classical music both in and out of school, exposure to the early rock and roll of the 60’s by his parents, growing up with Y2K radio hits, and eventually working in the Hip-hop industry as a producer in the 2010’s, it's no mystery Shades can grab any genre by the roots when he sets his eye to it.
Songs like Abstract Origami, ILY, Side 2 Side, and Numb leave no confusion to the familiarity Shades has with different genres, especially the hidden nostalgia that carries across his songs.
Seemingly in contrast, Shades ventures into uncharted territories on songs like Who’s to Say, New Shoulders, and the quintessential 25 ep, proving a mastery of skill and form in his musical practices, exhibiting his experience both in and out of the studio.

Interview with Shades
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have the luxury of working in multiple studios living in Los Angeles. I have experience working on analog consoles, recording live instruments with multiple microphones, and lyric workshops. I regularly work with Yamaha HS7 monitors in a treated studio, a Sony dynamic microphone, a Slate Digital microphone, and over $3000 worth of software for producing music that I have accumulated over 15 years.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The artists I find I enjoy are not confined to a polarized genre. My personal playlists contain a wide array of styles from artists like Brittany Howard, Smino, Choker, Jean Dawson, SZA, quickly quickly, A$AP Rocky, Show Me The Body, Citizen Cope, and the classics like Betty Davis, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and even Little Richard.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: From composing the instruments, writing the lyrics, comping the vocals, editing the arrangement, mixing and mastering the entire record, I became intimately familiar with creating any song from the ground-up, while also giving me the tools to surgically approach any process with an artist for what they might need. My unique array of capabilities has helped me also consider all the elements in a creative process to adjust my style to best fit whatever the artist may or may not know they need.
