Interview with Marten + Tonhof Studios
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Unfortunately I can't talk a lot about this project, but I love how we managed to combine a great vocal with a great production.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Several productions for dance artists
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: the freedom to work with what I love - music
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can I get a discount? What can you offer instead?
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: i think especially in mixing and mastering many people think that you can save damaged recordings by magic
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who is the project for? Are there deadlines, what is the budget? How many people are involved?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Clear communication and transparency. Nothing is more important in our industry than clear and reliable agreements.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Good one :D My Moog, an Apollo Interface, Macbook, a OB-6 and a fancy compressor.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: After school, I was supposed to get a "real" job first and did an apprenticeship as a bank clerk. Quickly it was clear that this profession does not fulfill me. so I put all my capacities in the music. Now I have a tonstuido in hamburg and a small team of talented artists and producers around me.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Analog driven, warm, deep, cool
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: there are very many artists we would like to work with. On top of the list are definitely CamlePhat and Kream. Both have shown time and again in the past how they can establish new sounds.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Composing and sounddesign, definitely followed by Mixing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Original synth sounds, balanced mixes and creative meldonies
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: definitely MEGAN+ The A-Team for sick vocals.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog and digital - combining the classic sounds with total recall :)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Always delivering a product we focused 200%
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: YES, always keep an eye on your low-end. Use enough low cuts on your instruments besides the bass.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly EDM stuff but also pop productions.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Always hybrid. We love to include analog gear for the warm and rounded sound.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Our studio is completely hybrid. As heart we use the converters and interfaces from Universal Audio. Outboard Gear with future-proofing from WES Audio must not be missing, of course. In addition, we have a constantly growing collection of modern and vintage analog synthesizers.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mostly the whole Melodic House scene is inspiring us. But the Influences from Meduza and Kream are big.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of the time we are busy with the production of first class songs in the electronic field.
