Interview with Aaron Siebenga
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop with Logic (charged by solar), UA interface, Nueman U67 Mic, Native Instruments, AKG headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started writing at age 12 while playing piano. I shifted into playing bass during high school, all the while continuing to write and explore metal, hip hop and rock. Afterwards I attended RAC for sound production and focused more on my talents of rapping which I then took to Toronto. Interning at a recording studio while creating my first EP and becoming more involved in the music scene I knew that this was where I wanted to be. I eventually left the studio to focus solely on my art. Fast forward I have two EPs's 1 full length album a slew of singles and a new album on the way.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: If punk rock from the 70's was starting out today but with the flare of today's hip hop.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I've already worked with several of my "heroes" but I would love to work with Anthony Keidis, Spencer Chamberlain, Meechy Darko, and Denzel Curry.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Mic your kick drum, run a sub through a gate on that kick drum, it gives you extra oomph.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rap/Rock, trap and alternative.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: The variety in my song-writing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My mixed bag of sounds from my upbringing. I pride myself on being able to stretch across various genres.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Talking to the client about their ideas/concepts, what is the song about? what is the emotion behind the song? Hearing the instrumental and formulating ideas, coming up with a melody or tag line, and building off of that.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have access to a full studio set up in Toronto at anytime or for demos/rough ideas I have an AKG 420 microphone with Logic Pro X. I have attended audio school and worked in multiple studios for the past decade.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by a lot of artists like OnCue, Dillanponders, or Melotika. I also continue to find inspiration from reading books or comedians and the way they talk about their craft.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mostly lyrical work. Helping to improve the song-writing, or featuring.
