ZÉ on SoundBetter

I'm a Singer Songwriter, Top-line writer, Recording & Performing Artist. I've worked in various genre's: AfroHouse, Electronic & Singer Songwriter. I'm the lead singer of the harp & vocal duo Lu Flur. I've collaborated with SA House/DJ Producers Eltonnick & AJourneyOfMilez incl. remixes by N'dinga Gaba & Migosy.

Powerful vocalists and songwriters such as Florence Welch, Sia, Nina Simone, Robert Plant & Joni Mitchell inspire me. My music ranges from minimalistic acoustic sounds to film-esque layered soundscapes. My hope is to create emotive, meaningful music allowing escapism and adding a little bit of beauty to the world.

I have private training in vocals and acoutsic/electric guitar. I've been writing, recording and performing music professionally, since 2012, as the lead singer of Lu Flur & my solo project. I've only recently ventured into the world of House/Electronic Dance music as a Top-line writer and vocalist. I'm always looking to take on genres outside of my current repertoire.

Language: English & Afrikaans
Recording: I'm able to record remotely

I worked ZÉ on my previous EP named My Wishes EP, the tittle of the song we did was Shades Of Blue.
I sent her an Instrumental idea.. Boom she had recorded Vocals on it and she had a lovely tone to her voice and had great control throughout the song. It was amazing.
It did not take her that long to write and record her vocals.
She absolutely had control over my Song LOL! she later added a lovely guitar solo.

Working with ZÉ was a dope experience and we working on more music together... Album maybe in the Future!!!!!!!!!!

Out of all the people i have written and produced songs with, ZÉ stands out as the most committed artist and songwriter, it's been a blessing to work with someone who not only has an amazing voice but is a powerful word smith, i couldn't be grateful enough for the opportunity to work with her, the songs we have done have so much life and continue to grow every day. Her perfectionist character and dedication to the projects we did is priceless.

ZÉ, I am excited for the world to receive you, looking forward to more beautiful songs.

Interview with ZÉ

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: Once I receive a track & hopefully a theme. I write lyrics beforehand and then modify them based on the track at hand - so that the phrasing feels natural. I experiment and improvise over the track trying out different melodies by using my voice mainly. I prefer to share work in progress to see if I'm on the right path. The overall process will also depend on the project at hand in terms of deadlines etc.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I've been writing, recording and performing music professionally since 2012 when I joined the Harp and Vocal duo Lu Flur. Since then I've been working on my own solo material and I've started working as a top-line writer from 2018.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: Lu Flur. It was my first band and experience as a working musician. I acted as the lead singer and acoustic guitarist & co-songwriter. It was a magical time and our EP, Floriology is something I'm super proud.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: I'm working on my own EP and also on collaborations with House DJ/Producers.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I'm a committed hard working person and will give my best to meet their requirements.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love to be able to live out and use my first love 'singing'. I like that I can be creative, improvise and experiment and work remotely. Collaborating with different artists keeps it interesting. To take on genre's that's sometimes out of my comfort zone is always a good challenge and opportunity to grow. I find it extremely exciting when a song is released out in to the world and heard by others.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: 1. I do think that a lot of people still don't view the voice as an instrument in itself. 2. From my experience top-line writing is looked down on by a lot of people (I've been one of them). Since I've given it a chance myself I think its not as easy as it seems. Yes, it helps a lot to have the instrumental already there but writing the lyrics and figuring out the vocal melody is a process in itself - which I've really come to enjoy.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: The most important thing for me is to tend to the business matters before going into the creative part to avoid awkwardness later on: What are the terms in terms of credits, royalties and rates? What is your timeline? Tell me more about the project you'd like me to work on? Who's the audience? What's your expectations and do you have any reference that I can draw upon?

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: My style is emotive, layered and can also be stripped down to only an acoustic guitar and vocals. I gather inspiration from nature, my own experiences, daily life and also from those who are close to me. I normally write with a theme in mind and my lyrics tend to paint pictures as I'm also a graphic designer. I have a big love for film music and a lot of the songs that I've worked on tend to lend itself to a cinematic feel. I like to improvise when it comes to top-line writing I find that's when you find the most natural sounding vocals/lyrics. My style in terms of song structures leans toward pop music.

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: Dance/Electronic/Afro-House and Acoustic Singer Songwriter. I like to make use of ambient vocals and create melodies with them which can sometimes become the 'hook' for a song.

  21. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  22. A: (1.) Vocals (2.) Top-line writing (3.) Lyrics (4.) Melodies

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I bring melodies, vocals and lyrics to a song. I do occasionally play acoustic/electric guitar if the song requires it.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I have my own small home 'studio' setup. My recording equipment includes: AKGH85 condenser mic for my vocals and LogicProX.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Benjamin Clementine, Sia, Joni Mitchell, Robert Plant, Laura Mvula, Florence Welch, The Feist, The Killers & Nina Simone etc.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: The most common work I do for clients is top-line writing and vocals.
