Interview with Bandeauxx.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Coastal Plus, the answer to "what does a Bandeauxx. concert sound like?" I took on the role of artist, vocalist, executive producer, because I wanted to put demos and drafts I had sitting on my laptop to use in a live show setting. During the COVID lockdown era I stayed home, wrote, recorded, edited music then commissioned visual artists all self-funded. Once restrictions were lifted I took my talents to an agency that worked with me as a performing act.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Getting music to sync licensing agents, also completed an album of club music which I will be performing as artist.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Mr. Robotic because he invited me to the site.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital due to ease of use and efficiency. I respect anyone that uses the analog routes (in regards to making music). For me, it's about being able to adapt to the situation at hand. Some people abhor laptops and anything that can connect wirelessly. Others can't imagine why you'd need a studio or keyboard that big. I believe we can all work together by establishing common grounds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to keep an open mind, an open ear and a productive attitude.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy making new things and twists on contemporary ideas.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: What's your hourly rate? A: depends on the scope of work and deadlines!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that AI can "take my job" at this stage. Second biggest is "anyone can do that" until they try and don't nail it the first time.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's the vision for the overall project? What end results do you desire?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have a vision and references in mind. A lot of my creative process is based on conversations and clear communication until we reach the desired results.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Apple laptop, WD external hard drive, ATH-M50x headphones, iphone (for voice notes, project notetaking), solar-power battery/converter.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started making beats on PC as a child, fell into DJing as an adult, now dual-wielding both skills to take myself and others further.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Electronic music informed by hip-hop, dancehall.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Right now, I believe Teezo Touchdown is doing some of the most interesting rap-opera rock hybrid songs I've heard in some time.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: TAKE BREAKS BEFORE YOU HATE YOUR OWN WORK.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-hop, electronic music with an emphasis on synths and vocals, club music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Project management - budgets, deadlines, task breakdowns, edits, revisions, creative input, execution.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Foresight, decisiveness, additional production, left-field ideas.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Listen to music, beatbox some simple ideas, record chord progressions or melodies and stop myself before the song gets too crowded for a songwriter or vocalist.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: For the sake of mobility and efficiency, I record everything into a Macbook Pro. For vocal takes, I use the Scarlett 2i2 with a MXL V76G. Very bare-bones in comparison to established studios, however, it's important to meet budgets and capture raw ideas in the moment.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Drake, Mike Dean, Flume, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Cardi B, Nile Rodgers, guy-manuel de homem-christo & Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk), The Knocks, ODESZA, Paperwater, Doja Cat.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: topline ideas (vocals and production), editing, instrumental work for libraries, song drafts & sketches.
