Interview with signalflowstudios

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: It has been amazing. We really got that 80's sound and the client is beyond happy. Lot's of 80's synths and guitars.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Finishing a Nufunk EP for an artist. It has been amazing.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: 50/50 you need both. Years ago the digital was really noticeable but it is getting super close. That being said I do not get the same dynamic range as I do with my analog. I love to push. Digital just gets smashed. I love the digital editing tools.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: To give them a polished product within. a standard time frame. I guarantee to deliver quality.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Creating. It is like cooking when it all comes together.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How much? I learned early on to post my prices and refer them to the site. I can not be nickled and dimed. I have to many years under my belt and it is counter productive.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That it can be done with years of training and learning. The ears take years to. develop. All the adds selling gear do not tell you it is the user not the gear. They want to make money.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Budget, Time frame and vision or sound reference.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Be detailed in what your a looking for. It is best to be honest so you do not waste your time or other peoples time. Sometimes it is ok to pass on a project if you are not the right fit.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: without electricity what can I do? Lol Burl AD, Warm Stereo EQ, Moog Sub 25 and Prohpet 6, upright piano

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: 15 years. Started by going to college for audio engineerng and music compostion then spent years in the studios. Post and music based.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Funky.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Tuxedo. The sound they are getting right now is incredible. Real music. Organic

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Levels are everything. Compressing, EQ all adds up to gain staging. Wish I had learned that earlier in my career. That is how you can retain dynamics and a great deep sound.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Hip Hop/Electronic/POP

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Listening for one but that translates into attention to detail

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: We bring versatility. We have our hands in so many facets of the process no matter the need we have and answer and experience with it.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: We start with the vision and then we lay out the building blocks from there. Each project is different so there is no one way. We do what is best for the client and the sound they want to create.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: We have a 50/50 analog and digital setup. The sound we capture is organic and warm but we also have the digital component for a fast paced studio environment. The result is a vibe.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Daft Punk, Tuxedo. We are really into the Nudisco/Nufunk sound right now. It has such a warmth and musicianship to it.
