Martha Colby on SoundBetter

Martha Colby "scrapes, glides and plucks her way like a flame." Performing Songwriter Magazine. Martha Colby can add string pads and textures to music that you may never have thought possible. She is an adept improviser as well as a pretty kick ass sight reader. Trained in classical and jazz music, she applies these techniques to her projects.

Martha Colby is a seasoned freelancer from her days in NYC. While in New York, she earned her living from performing with a wide variety of bands -- from avant garde jazz, straight ahead and latin, to chamber music and accompanying pop bands and singer songwriters. She has since left the rat race to take on a solo, and a string quartet gig in Yellowstone National Park. There she performs 4 hours a night, 5 nights a week and has developed quite a following from the diversity of the music she performs nightly. She also plays house concerts throughout the country during her off season from the park.

Martha is an absolute joy to work with. We started working together in an adaptive music program for a special ed department. She was the perfect fit for this work; incredible musical skills, ability to adapt and improv, and the greatest attitude and spirit. I then asked her to record cello parts for my upcoming album of ambient music. She provided parts for 3 of the songs, and they are simply perfect. She got them to me very quickly, and the audio quality and musicianship are stunning, and exactly what I had hoped for. Can't recommend her work enough. You rock Martha!

I've worked with Martha many times for many different projects. She is an incredibly accomplished player in the jazz, rock, folk and classical realms. She fills in bass lines with ease, has a lovely singing voice, and is fun to work with. Her arrangements are thoughtful and very creative. I highly recommend her.

Gear Highlights
  • I'm not a big gear billowing individual... I use effects sometimes - a harmonizer
  • a looper
  • a delay... I also use a lot of the built in effects of the cello.
