Ally Donald on SoundBetter

Your music deserves to connect. I turn raw tracks / ideas into mixes that sound great everywhere — from earbuds to festival stages. As a guitarist, bassist, bandleader and producer, I know both sides of the glass. I’ll capture the heart of your songs and the detail your audience will notice.

Your music deserves to connect with people. My job is to take what you’ve recorded and shape it into a mix that feels alive, balanced, and ready to be heard anywhere — headphones, car speakers, clubs, or big festival stages.

I’ve been playing, writing, and producing music for over 20 years. As a guitarist, bassist, bandleader, and producer, I’ve spent time on both sides of the glass, which helps me understand what artists really need from a mix. It’s not just about making things sound clean — it’s about keeping the heart of your songs intact while giving them the punch and clarity they deserve.

When we work together, I’ll take the time to hear your vision, check out your references, and make sure the end result feels true to you. I’m not interested in forcing your music into a mold — I want it to sound like the best version of your voice and style.

I’ve also worked in film scoring and live sound, which gives me a wide perspective on how music works across different contexts. That experience helps me bring out the emotion and energy in your tracks, whether it’s a stripped-back acoustic song or a full band production.

If you’re looking for someone who cares about the details but also about the feeling behind the music, I’d love to hear about your project. Let’s make something that not only sounds good, but connects.

Interview with Ally Donald

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: I try to bring out the soul that’s already there. Sometimes that means lifting the energy so a chorus hits harder, other times it’s adding space so a lyric can breathe. I look for the moments that make a song feel human and then shape the sound around them, so the listener feels connected, not just impressed.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: Every project starts with a conversation — I want to know what your vision is and what references inspire you. Once I have your tracks, I’ll organize and clean the session, then build the mix around the core elements: drums, bass, vocals. From there I shape the arrangement, balance, and dynamics so the song feels alive and connects emotionally. I send regular updates, take on feedback, and refine until you’re happy. My goal is a smooth, collaborative process that gets your music sounding the way you imagined it — or better.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I work mostly “in the box,” which means I can stay flexible and work with clients anywhere in the world while keeping mixes consistent and reliable. That said, I love the warmth and character that analog gear can bring, and I’ll use it when the project calls for it. My setup is hybrid by design — professional monitoring and a powerful plugin workflow for precision, with the option of adding analog color when it enhances the music.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: I’m inspired by mixers who know how to make songs hit hard but still feel emotional. Zakk Cervini is a huge influence for his modern rock and pop-punk sound, and I admire how Andrew Scheps and Serban Ghenea bring clarity and impact to their mixes. On the production side, Rick Rubin’s focus on the artist’s vision always inspires me. And in film scoring, people like Hans Zimmer and Hildur Guðnadóttir remind me how powerful music can be in shaping emotion and story.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: The most common work I do is mixing and production — taking raw tracks and shaping them into release-ready songs. Sometimes that’s a full mix and master for a band or solo artist, other times it’s helping arrange and produce a demo so it feels complete. I also do film scoring and post work, but the bulk of my clients come to me for mixes that sound balanced, clear, and emotionally powerful.
