Interview with HP Music

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Working with so many talented artists and bands and creating something special!

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: That it's easy! Production takes years to master and every day I am still learning.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Make sure you do your research and be prepared, make sure you have an idea or sound that you are looking to achieve, that could be a reference track or artists that have inspired you.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: Harrison Perks is best known for his successful Artist Development facilities and studios HP Music, which was founded in 2013. Being able to work with unsigned and established artists has allowed Harrison to be able to produce and compose a vast range of genres, leading him to become a production and composition force. Signing to two publishing sync deals in 2016, Harrison is now pursuing his passion for film/commercial scores. Harrison’s affinity with music has been apparent since the age of 3. From a young age, he studied piano, becoming highly accomplished in playing and composing and this helped him develop his skills and become a multi-instrumentalist. Since then, he’s as at home with drums, violin, bass and guitar as he is with piano. In addition, through his love of classical music, he’s gained a fine understanding of the theory of music and created a wide-ranging approach to different playing styles. Over the past 10 years, he’s composed more than a thousand pieces of music. Many of these have led to assistance in publishing within the film and TV industries – and it’s enabled him to run his own award-winning studio where he can professionally produce and record a wide spectrum of music for a variety of artists. Harrisons ability to engineer, mix, master and compose is recognized on a national and international scale.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Muse - the combination of classical elements, the diverse range of production sounds both digital and analogue would be an absolute dream.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Always organise your workflow and sessions, my main DAW is Avid Protools Ultimate, and I make sure that each session is labelled, coloured and organised at all times. A messy session makes a messy song.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Pop, Singer-Songwriter, Rock, Indie

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: Being able to diversify myself across multiple genres of composing and production.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I try and push the boundaries of production and make sure that the song encapsulates the artists sound. I am a multi-instrumentalist and a multi-genre producer meaning I can pick out more directional notes, sounds and things that can really make the production and composition pop.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I work closely with Artists and clients to find the right sounds and capture what they are hearing in their head. I normally start off with a foundation track of piano and build a digital pre-production around it, we can then play around with vocal melodies, harmonies etc and then take the track into full production, where some instruments like drums, guitars etc will be recorded fully in the studio.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Chris Lord Alge, I had the pleasure of working with him at Fabric Studios as part of a Mix with the Masters camp. Andrew Schepps, I love his production. Hans Zimmer, for his outstanding compositions and orchestrated pieces. Calvin Harris, Kygo, Zedd and Mark Ronson are all massive inspirations in the modern & commercial music world.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: My main role as Head Producer & Founder of HP Music is songwriting/composition and production. Our studios are famous for their Artist Development Packages, so day today I am running sessions with Artists and Clients in the studio.

  25. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  26. A: My 1176 compressor, Neve Pre-amp, SSL Matrix console, Kontakt Keyboard and Computer
