Interview with the lab
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: We're always making beats and instrumentals and tend to start by going through our latest batch with a client in order to inspire them to help start an idea. Alternatively, we play chords on either the piano or guitar if that's what they prefer. Once we have written the song with the client and have the arrangement/structure down, we record the vocals. Then we begin the production process and meticulously work on getting the best result for the client possible. This also involves the mix and mastering stages. At all times our priority to ensure the artist/writer that we're working with is 100% happy with the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: The ability to take it from a basic idea to being release ready.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How do you work so well yet so fast. Answer: Practice, practice, practice!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Being able to think objectively on the process of making a song and putting ourselves in the shoes of the listener.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: We work between a variety of studios so rely heavily on our portable set up which consists of: - 2 x MacBook Pro laptops running Logic Pro X, Fl Studio and Ableton Live - Apogee Duet Audio Interface - Apollo Twin Audio Interface - AKG C414 Microphone - SM7B Microphone - Akai MPK49 Midi Keyboard - Audio Technica ATH-M50 Headphones - Sony MDR-7506 Headphones
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: We're inspired by all creative individuals that are constantly looking to better their craft. Prominent individuals that we aspire to include Timbaland, Max Martin, Scott Storch, Alex Da Kid, Louis Bell, Jaycen Joshua, Greg Kurstin, Tainy, Polow Da Don, Ryan Tedder, Benny Blanco.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog wins on sound, but digital makes it possible to work anywhere. Also, digital has improved so much over the years and is catching up to analog in terms of sonic quality which is great news for all producers and engineers. So digital for us.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: We will give our best every time. No doubt.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being creative.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The process of making music has changed so much that a big misconception is that there are defined roles. Nowadays, writers will have input on the production side and vice versa. Mix engineers can help elevate the song by bringing out melodic parts, which is another part of the songwriting. There are no set roles.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Most helpful advice we could give is to have references for what you're wanting to achieve. Working over the internet is great, but the lack of personal contact makes it hard to know what exactly someone is looking for. So a couple songs or sounds that can be sent as a reference make not only our job easier, but also helps the client get what they were looking for.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Over the years we've worked with so much different gear that we can really make do with the most basic set ups. But ideally: - MacBook Pro running any decent DAW - Any pair of good quality headphones - Midi Keyboard (49 keys. Almost always enough) - Apogee Duet - Pair of Barefoot monitors to blast the music!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Contemporary.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Going against the grain of name dropping famous artists, we'd like to work with any artist that really cherishes their craft and is always looking to get the best result. This can only push the song and everyone involved in the process to improve.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Keep it simple. If in doubt, take it out.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, hip hop, RnB, Trap, reggaeton.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: With our experience as writers, producers, musicians and engineers we most often work with artists and songwriters from the inception of a demo idea all the way through to the final master. This way we can give them our total focus and make sure the song is the best it can possibly be.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: We're writing and producing for Charlie Jones who is a really exciting up and coming artist from the UK. We produced, mixed and mastered his most recent releases 'Strangers in the Dark' and 'Love Taker'. Much more to come from him, watch this space...
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Jimmy Burney - songwriting, melodies, vocals...he's your guy. A-list. And he knows all the best places to eat in LA!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: We've both been making music full time for the last 5 years. We come from different countries (England and Denmark) and different backgrounds but share the same belief that music has no boundaries and that it should be about having fun and enjoying what you do.
